HUMANITIES

WHY STUDY THE HUMANITIES?

The Humanities helps us to better understand who we are as a people, a culture and a society, studying the humanities can help us deal with all sorts of issues and problems facing the world and equip us with the much-sought after ‘soft skills’ such as critical and creative thinking, cultural understanding and working in teams.

2025 is going to be a big year in the Humanities Faculty and I am very excited to return to my role as Learning Area Manager after spending 2024 working with the Year 7 Student Management Team. I will be working closely with our East Campus Curriculum leader Josh Cukierman and we are looking forward to continuing to develop and innovate the learning for all students studying in the Humanities domain at McKinnon Secondary College.

For new families joining the McKinnon family, welcome! The Humanities faculty is a large and diverse group of disciplines that begins for our Year 7 students with the study of History and Geography. As students move further up the school, they have the opportunity to choose from a number of electives such as Global Politics, Commerce and Philosophy.

This year we now have two Commerce offerings running for our Year 10 students, Business and Legal Studies and Economics and Finance which is a fantastic springboard and opportunities for enhancement in our VCE commerce subjects. We also have, for the first time, a Year 11 VCE Sociology class running as well as Year 12 VCE Philosophy running for the first time in a number of years. We wish all the students and teachers well as they embark on their studies in the Humanities in 2025.

2024 was an incredible year for our students, particularly those who achieved fantastic results for their Units 3 and 4 subjects, and we know our faculty will continue to go from strength to strength. We will continue to celebrate our achievements and events in the newsletter.
