Book Review - 'In My Heart' by Jo Witek

In My Heart is a warm and beautifully illustrated picture book that explores one of the hardest things for young children to explain: their feelings. Author Jo Witek guides readers on a colourful journey as a little girl describes the many emotions that fill her heart, including happiness, sadness, bravery, anger, and shyness. Each page uses simple, child-friendly language that helps readers understand that every feeling has a place and a purpose.

One of the most striking features of the book is its artwork. The layered heart cut-outs and playful drawings make every page burst with personality. The visuals not only capture a child’s imagination but also help connect each emotion to a shape, colour, or action. This makes the story especially helpful for young readers who are still learning how to identify and talk about what they feel.

In My Heart is an excellent read-aloud book for classrooms and families. It encourages conversation, empathy, and emotional awareness, skills that are just as important as reading and writing. Whether a child is feeling brave like a superhero or soft and slow like a snail, this book reminds them that all feelings are valid.

Happy reading and have a lovely weekend!
