Our Year 8 Smart Threads students took on the challenge of designing and creating their own light-up cushions inspired by animals or monsters of their own creation. This hands-on project blended creativity and technology, giving students the chance to explore smart textiles while developing practical sewing and design skills.

Students began by investigating how fabrics can be combined with technology in products such as heated clothing, sensor-based fitness wear, and LED-enhanced fashion. They researched different fibre types, learning how material properties influence both the design and function of a product.

Students learned a range of new skills to develop their designs from concept to completion. They learned how to create their own sewing patterns, as well as being introduced to a variety of hand sewing techniques. Students then applied their understanding of smart textiles to add LED lights to their creations, using conductive thread to create a functional and durable electronic circuit.

This project introduced students to a range of practical sewing skills and encouraged innovation and problem-solving as students brought their unique designs to life, merging artistic creativity with technological thinking.
