🎄 🧺 Buddy Christmas Picnic!
This Friday, our Preps and Grade 6 students will enjoy their annual Buddy Christmas Picnic. This time around, the Grade 6 students will be providing the food, so all our Preps need to bring is a small gift for their buddy so they can exchange presents. It is always such a special way to celebrate the year and the growing and learning they have shared together!
Â
🥳 A fun and busy week ahead!
We have a big and exciting week ahead! We begin with Grandparents Day on Monday, followed by our Step Up session on Tuesday, where students will meet their 2026 class and teacher. On Wednesday, we have the Silent Disco and a special canteen lunch, and we finish the week with our Buddy Picnic on Friday. Phew! What a fantastic week of celebrations and milestones ahead

CURRICULUM
📚 Phonemic awareness: reading and phonics
This week marks our final lesson of UFLI for the year. Students will be learning about open and closed syllables, which will support them in reading longer words.
Our focus will include:
We will be reviewing previously learned heart words.
Â
What can you do at home?
• Help your child read the take-home book, decodable passages and Heart Words from their book pocket. Aim for fluency by the second day of reading.Â
As your child reads, encourage them to recognise familiar words instantly and only sound out unfamiliar ones.
• Enjoy bedtime stories together to build vocabulary, comprehension and a love of reading.
• Work through the optional UFLI home pages if you’d like some extra phonics practise at home.

Â
📝 Literature: reading responses and writingÂ
Throughout the week, we will be enjoying lots of beautiful Christmas stories and completing a range of literature responses to them. These will include both writing and creative craft activities. Here are some of our favourites!

Â
What can you do at home?
• Build in authentic writing experiences like writing a shopping list, birthday cards, wish lists or notes for family members.Â
• Say it, then write it – Ask your child to say their sentence out loud first, then write it down.
• Check for capitals and full stops – Remind your child to start with a capital letter and finish with a full stop.
•  Practise writing the Heart Words, taking care to notice the tricky 'heart' parts in the word.
Â
🔢  MathsÂ
We will also be revising key number skills, including place value, addition and subtraction - all with a fun Christmas theme
Â
What can you do at home?
• Compare everyday objects together eg. “Which spoon is longer?” or “Which book feels heavier?”
• Involve your child in cooking by helping measure and compare how much different containers can hold.
• Encourage your child to use language like longer/shorter, heavier/lighter and holds more/holds less during play.
• Provide simple household items (cups, boxes, toys) for your child to sort and compare by size, weight or capacity.
