Dear LPS families,

Navigating Transitions: Supporting Our Children Through Change

As we move closer to the end of the year, many of our students are beginning to think about their transition into the next year level. This time often brings a mix of emotions, excitement, curiosity, nervousness, and sometimes even worry. Children may wonder: Who will my friends be? Who will my teacher be? What will change next year? These feelings are normal, and as parents and educators, we play an important role in helping them navigate the unknowns.

In my own home, these conversations are very familiar. My eldest daughter, now in Year 8, went through the same cycle of wondering and worrying each year. We’d talk about the opportunities a new class brings, new relationships, fresh experiences, and the chance to grow in confidence. I reminded her that friendships don’t disappear simply because students land in different classes; recess and lunch, after-school play, and weekends meant she could always stay connected.

Interestingly, her personal coping strategy was to tell herself she wouldn’t be in the same class as her closest friends. That way, she wouldn’t feel disappointed if things didn’t go her way, but she would be thrilled if she ended up with them after all.

Now, my younger daughter is going through the same transition journey, saying things like, “I really hope I get this teacher,” or “I hope I’m with these people.” Again, we have the same conversations about making the most of whatever class she is placed in, being open to new friendships, and trusting that she will always be supported. As parents, one of the most important things we can do is help our children manage disappointment, celebrate new opportunities, and remind them that they are capable of thriving in a new environment.

Student Leadership: Courage, Growth, and Gratitude

This week, our Grade 5 students showed tremendous courage as they presented their speeches to become school captains for 2026. It was inspiring to see how confidently they spoke about our school values, what Pegasus Spirit means to them, and the kind of leaders they aspire to be. Their reflections on leadership were thoughtful, sincere, and grounded in their love for our LPS community.

Following the speeches, we interviewed a number of students and were incredibly impressed by the quality and depth of their responses. Their maturity, insight, and ability to articulate what leadership means made us very proud.

This week also marked a milestone I hadn’t fully realised until our weekly assembly preparation began: it was the final normal assembly for our 2025 school captains. I have absolutely loved working with this team each week and I want to thank Levon, Indi, Lacey and Paige for all their hard work. Their growth has been enormous; they have become confident, articulate, organised, and wonderfully funny leaders who have brought energy and joy to every assembly. I will miss our weekly meetings, but I am equally excited to support the journey of our 2026 leadership team.
