Year 7 Writing Challenge

This term, students in 7A took on the challenge of re-writing a chapter from the novel Two Wolves. They worked carefully to mirror the author’s sentence style and rhythm, while conveying Ben’s fear, exhaustion, and the important events of the story. We are proud to share a selection of their writing with you.

Tempest

Ben glanced and saw lightning flicker in the distance. Terror. He intensely rushed Olive to a warm dry place for the night. He scrambled to fashion a bed with ferns for Olive to sleep on under a massive tree. CRACK. Run. Quick. A big wad of cash, downwards aching to meet the waters cold touch…50k....Gone. He pondered. Before he knew the grasp of night took him.

Tempest

A flash of light, that’s what it looked like, lightning. The weather covered the sky quickly. Another flash lit the surroundings, upstream. West. The creek fluttered to life, making Ben tremble. The choice kept circling his mind. Why didn’t he build a shelter? Why did they walk so late? The rain kept on singing; it had been raining since that fateful night. When his parents ran, left them. His exhaustion covered every bone in his body, his knees and his elbows. One with the ground. Ben saw Bonzo staring back at him from Olive’s grip, staring at the bag of money Ben had picked up. 50 thousand had fallen in the creek. LOST, 50,000. Ben staggered upstream with Olive cradled in his arms, sheltering under a big tree Olive had pointed out during the day. He lay her against the thick brown trunk. He then collapsed beside her, shivering uncontrollably. His thoughts churned. Things will get better. He melted into the ground, one object.

Tempest

Fear and cold swirled through Ben like the wind swirled through the trees above him. Looking down at Olive, Ben felt the first drop of rain splat on his scalp and trickle down his back like ice. Shelter. We need shelter. Ben grabbed the bag and the handle tore. A thick wad of cash tumbled out of the bag and into the creek. Ben didn’t care. Not after everything that had happened. Hauling Olive onto his back Ben stumbled off towards the silhouette of a giant tree in the distance. Ben gathered ferns and laid olive down on the makeshift bed. Exhausted Ben lay down next to Olive. As lightning crashed in the distance, Ben slipped into the icy darkness of sleep.
