Year 9 Indonesian
Learning a language doesn't just sound good...it also tastes delicious!
Last week our Year 9 Indonesian students had the chance to go across the road from MECS to visit the Tram Cafe, which is operated by Ibu Olivia, one of our favourite local Indonesians! To ‘earn’ their hot drink, the students had to order in complete Indonesian sentences. Then, while sitting in a repurposed tram, Ibu Olivia also brought in amazing Indonesian fried foods to enjoy.
But perhaps the greatest highlight was listening to Ibu Olivia tell her story of growing up in a remote Indonesian village where life was challenging, even to continue schooling beyond primary school. Yet she overcame many obstacles to fulfill her dream of learning a new language and culture and to eventually come to Australia. Cultural experiences like these are rich and memorable for our students, and sometimes they are right on our doorstep!
The students came back to school not only full of yummy Indonesian food but also with a deeper appreciation of other cultures. These experiences are also a key part of the journey of our school living out the MECS Thread of being a Welcoming Advocate.
