This week students from Grade’s 3 and 4 completed their food construction unit. They learned about artist Peter Anton who makes giant sculptures of food, and Wayne Thiebaud, an American Pop artist renowned for his paintings of sweet treats such as ice creams, cupcakes and donuts. First the students constructed an armature for their donut using magazine paper and tape. It was messy work applying three layers of papier mache to their donut but the students loved getting their hands dirty!
After the papier mache had dried, the donuts were painted a beige colour for the base of the donut and then it was time to add the icing and sprinkles or drizzle. Each student chose their own icing and mixed the paint and decided on colourful sprinkles or classic icing drizzle. They were finished off with a gloss varnish and were ready to eat (no, not really, but they look good enough to eat!) Here are some students ‘enjoying’ their donuts and a few of the amazing examples:
Whilst waiting for the paper mache to dry, students also made a fun donut collage using paper and paint pens:
For the final project of the unit, the students constructed cupcakes made out of paper cups, newspaper, crepe paper and magiclay. After making the cake (scrunching and covering newspaper), decorating the base (cutting and gluing crepe paper) they used some modelling skills such as rolling and flattening to create icing and whipped cream out of magiclay. There were even some novelty cupcakes such as frogs, pigs, deserted island and ghosts, amazing work!
And if you happen to swing by the office, you will see some of the donuts and cupcakes in a lovely cake stand:
