The Catholic Church dedicates each month of the year to a certain devotion. The month of October is dedicated to the Holy Rosary, one of the best known of all Catholic devotions. October includes the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary (October 7). The best way to celebrate the month is, of course, to pray the Rosary.

The Rosary draws its mysteries from the New Testament and is centered on the  events of the Incarnation and Redemption. The Mysteries of the Rosary give us an understanding of the life of Jesus and his Mother.

  • The Joyful Mysteries (Monday, Saturday, Sundays of Advent and Christmas)

are taken mostly from Saint Luke’s Gospel in the New Testament. They involve the joyful events of Jesus’ childhood.

First Joyful Mystery – Mary is Chosen Mother of God

Second Joyful Mystery – Mary Visits Elizabeth

Third Joyful Mystery – Jesus is Born

Fourth Joyful Mystery – Jesus is Offered to God

Fifth Joyful Mystery – Jesus is Found in the Temple

  • The Luminous Mysteries (Thursdays) bring a deeper understanding to the public life of Jesus. They fill in the blanks between the childhood of Jesus and His suffering and death on the cross.

First Luminous Mystery – The Baptism of the Lord

Second Luminous Mystery – The Wedding in Cana

Third Luminous Mystery – The Proclamation of the Kingdom of God and the call to

conversion

Fourth Luminous Mystery – The Transfiguration

Fifth Luminous Mystery – The Institution of the Eucharist

  • The Sorrowful Mysteries (Tuesday, Friday, Sundays in Lent) remind us of how much Jesus loves us. They recall how He suffered and died just for us.

First Sorrowful Mystery – The Agony of Jesus

Second Sorrowful Mystery – Jesus is Scourged

Third Sorrowful Mystery – Jesus is Crowned

Fourth Sorrowful Mystery – Jesus Carries His Cross

Fifth Sorrowful Mystery – Jesus Dies on the Cross

  • The Glorious Mysteries (Wednesdays and other Sundays) tell us what happened after Jesus died-His Resurrection, the descent of the Holy Spirit and the love Jesus had for his Mother.

First Glorious Mystery – Jesus Rises from the Dead

Second Glorious Mystery – Jesus Ascends to Heaven

Third Glorious Mystery – Descent of the Holy Spirit

Fourth Glorious Mystery – Mary is taken up into Heave
