Staffing Update

As we start term 4, we wanted to share a staffing change in the school for the final quarter of the school year.

Joe Masci, our Italian specialist, has taken on a role as class teacher of 1/2R.

Roy Lee has taken on Joe's specialist role and will be taking classes outside for PE each week. Roy will also be teaching 5/6G each Tuesday.

These changes mean that our Italian program will take a break for the final 10 weeks of the school year (whilst we offer PE as a specialist subject) but will return in 2025 for all classes.

End of Term 3 thank-yous

It feels like a long time ago but we need to thank some people for the amazing final day of Term 3.

Our Footy Colours Day is always a great way to finish the term but this year the celebrations and assembly were particularly great.

Before school, our parents, led by Sophie Maguire and Lyndon Galvin, provided delicious bacon and egg rolls and coffee for our community. Thanks to Sophie and Lyndon for co-ordinating this and to all of the other parent volunteers who made this happen.

Thanks also to Little Sister Bakery, Burd Eggs and Woolworths Metro and their generous donations to the stalls.

During the assembly we welcomed Madi Mercer (Ghostgum Designs), a young Wadawurrung artist to talk to the students. Madi was one of the artists involved in creating the amazing 'Flame' artwork that was recently donated to the school and is currently exhibited in the office. This artwork was an incredibly generous donation by Ha Dieu Ford, one of our amazing SKiPPS parents who purchased it at a charity auction with all proceeds going to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.

On the footy theme, we were also joined by Emmelie Fiedler from the St Kilda AFLW team to talk at assembly and run a handball competition. It was fascinating to hear about Emmelie's weekly routine and the hard work and training that is required to play football professionally. Huge thanks to Sophie Maguire for arranging this visit and the donation of two signed St Kilda jerseys (and many other goodies) to the school.

The final assembly also saw us draw the winners of our Trivia Night raffle.

A huge thank you to all of the parents who purchased tickets for the raffle (and to those who attended on the evening itself). Your efforts meant that the event raised $8355 - enough to purchase and install a brand new water trough and water bottle taps for the quadrangle.

Term break building works

Whilst the school was noticeably quieter over the last fortnight as students and staff took a much-needed break, we did take this opportunity to complete some building and grounds upgrades and maintenance.

Most noticeably, our school quadrangle has just been beautifully resurfaced over the holidays, and it looks fantastic! Students will enjoy a fresh, safe space for play and learning, providing a shady spot as we gear up for summer.

The break also saw;

  • the creation of two new small group/office/consulting areas in the school by constructing new walls.
  • The rebuilding of a collapsing bluestone wall in the quadrangle
  • moving of our 'friendship bench' to allow easier access into the quadrangle
  • repair of faulty fire sensors in our upstairs classrooms
  • gutter and downpipe clearing and cleaning of our solar panels
  • continued exploration and planning for the reconstruction of our Kitchen Dining and Art Rooms, ready for the start of next year.

Curriculum Day - Monday 4th November

With the Melbourne Cup Public Holiday on Tuesday 5th November, plan your long weekend now, as students will not be required at school on this day.

Team Kids will be available to supervise your child on Monday 4th November if needed. Reserve a spot at www.teamkids.com.au

Book Shopping

If you find yourself needing to buy any new books, please consider supporting Readings, St. Kilda with your purchase. If you mention that you are a SKiPPS family, Readings donate a percentage of your spend for our students to select new books for their classroom libraries.

Earlier this year, some of our Year 3/4s went on an outing to Readings, St. Kilda where the staff engaged the students with a presentation about the process of books being published and then prepared for sale. The students asked super questions about how the staff know what books are most popular at the time and how long they stay on the shelves for.

The money that had been accrued from SKiPPS family purchases meant that every student at the shop that day was able to choose a new book for the Year 3/4 Classroom Libraries.

Book Contacting

It may seem hard to believe, but we still have books on our shelves that require contacting. If you are interested in taking a bag of books, please see Jac or Wendy. The contact will be provided. If you would like a refresher on 'bubble free contacting', here is a link to a quick You Tube clip.

We are so grateful to the amazing parents who have given up so much of their time already this year to help us get through this process. Naturally, contacted books means they have a much longer life and so many children get to enjoy them year after year. We are so proud of our classroom libraries, thank you for being a part of the journey.
