Level 2: Connect

Welcome back to our Year 2 students and families for the final term of the year! During this term, we will embrace all the learning we’ve done so far and focus on consolidating our knowledge. This term provides a wonderful opportunity for students to strengthen their skills, build confidence, and reflect on their progress ready for their transition into year 3. We look forward to a productive and enjoyable term ahead!

Friday 25 October is our robotics incursion with Coding Edge.

Writing

Over the next two weeks, our writing focus will be on exploring procedural texts. This type of text is particularly engaging for students because it teaches students how to do or make something by following clear, step-by-step instructions. Whether it's a recipe, a craft project, or directions for a game, procedural texts are a practical and fun way to build writing skills. Learning how to write procedural texts helps students organise their thoughts logically and use precise language. It’s a great way to enhance both literacy and real-world problem-solving skills.

Reading

It’s important for students to practice reading regularly, as it builds both confidence and skills in fluency, expression, and comprehension. We are proud to see how much progress our students have made this year in their reading abilities, with many showing great improvements in how they express themselves while reading aloud and in their understanding of what they read. This term we will continue exploring a variety of books in class and during our reading group sessions.

One key area we are focusing on is procedural texts—reading and understanding step-by-step instructions, like recipes or how-to guides. Learning to read these types of texts strengthens students' ability to follow directions, organise information, and apply their knowledge in everyday tasks.

Please remember that there are lots of interesting non-fiction texts that student can read on 'Wushka.' If students would prefer a hard copy non-fiction text they can borrow from the classroom.

Spelling

The spelling pattern we are focusing on is:

Learning patterns in words is crucial for developing strong spelling skills and improving reading fluency. Learning common patterns helps students recognise and spell unfamiliar words more easily. By practising these spelling patterns regularly, both at school and at home, students will become more confident in their writing and spelling abilities. We encourage you to help your child practice writing these words, as consistent practice will reinforce their learning and help them apply these patterns to new words in the future.

Maths

Over the next two weeks, our Year 2 students will be exploring the concepts of transformation and location in mathematics. They will dive into positional and directional language, learning how to describe the position of objects and how to follow commands using terms like "quarter turn," "half turn," and "three-quarter turn." Students will also become familiar with the difference between clockwise and counterclockwise directions. This hands-on learning will strengthen their understanding of movement, direction, and space, as well as build important problem-solving skills.
