Official Opening of the New Building & Library
by Helen Freeman
Yesterday we all enjoyed the official opening of our wonderful new building. We were grateful to have the Honourable Ben Carroll the Deputy Premier and Minister for Education there at the assembly. We also welcomed Matt Fregon the Member for Ashwood and John Mullahy the Member for Glen Waverley and our other guests.
Mr Mark Lumley our Koori Education Support Officer did a moving Acknowledgment to Country.
Adria our school captain joined the minister and me to cut the ceremonial ribbon to officially open the new building.
While taking a tour of the new building and Library, the Minister visited one of our Foundation and Year One classes where the students eagerly shared their latest published writing pieces, with him which he enjoyed immensely.
On another note, welcome back everyone! I hope you enjoyed the break from school routine and were able to recharge the batteries, ready to launch into Term 4. We have another busy term ahead with an array of learning opportunities and experiences planned that includes the Solar Challenge, a range of sporting events, Years 3/4 Camp, Foundation-2 Swimming, Year 6 Graduation celebrations, and the end of Year Whole School Celebration just to mention a few. All of this happens concurrently with the regular business of teaching and learning and professional development of staff. We are all looking forward to the weeks ahead with great enthusiasm.
Once again, we all enjoyed the footy day celebration day on the last day of term, it was a huge success. I would like to thank our wonderful Parent’s Association for organising the ‘special footy lunch’ which is always a highlight of the day.
As per the schools and DoE SunSmart policy the students are required to wear hats from 1st September through until 30th April. As the days become longer, we urge all students and their families to make sure they wear a hat during break times – the UV rays can be quite strong even during the dreary weather! All students need to have their school hat on to always play outside! Please dig out your child’s hat and make sure they have it in their bag and that it is labelled with their name. You can purchase a new school hat from PSW, Glen Waverley and we also have them for sale at the Office.
Yesterday, we had a number of students representing SSPS at the Division Athletics meet at the Bill Stewart Athletics track in East Burwood. All the students did an amazing job qualifying and then competing in the competition. The following students have made it through to the next stage of the competition which is the Regional Athletics on the 24th October at the Doncaster Athletics Track. We wish them all the very best, go Syndal!

11-year-old Relay - Lucas, Lincoln, Lewis and Benjamin
Something very exciting took place over the holidays. Mr Riley, Scott (father of Scarlett in Year 6), and Jeff our school groundsman built a’ GaGa Pit’ for our students. We can’t thank them enough for their time, skills and hard work. Thank you also to the PA for their contribution towards it. The students are already enjoying loads of fun playing GaGa Ball.
This afternoon at approximately 4.30pm it was the long-awaited opening of the ‘time capsule’ buried in 2004. The School Captains, Danielle and Sam from 2004 did the honours of opening the capsule.
Have a great fortnight.
