Twelve Hours = One Book. Or Eight!

Last Monday, almost seventy Secondary students gave a whole day (or 12 hours) to working as a team to write a book. These books are published online as a way of supporting children with cancer. The Kids Cancer Project runs "Write a Book in a Day" and it supports sick children in two ways: by raising money for cancer research, and by offering entertainment and support to those in hospital.

It is a huge undertaking. Each team is given a set of parameters that they must use to write their book. It must be planned, drafted, written, edited and illustrated within the twelve hours. The spirits remained high the whole day. Many teachers that came by commented on the "buzz" in the room. By the end of the day it begins to develop a "sleep over" vibe with pizza for dinner and a few yawns in evidence!

Thank you to all the students who entered into the event with such enthusiasm and team spirit. Up to time of writing NCS teams have raised $3,537. We pray that God uses this money, along with the fundraising from many other schools to find answers in the research into cancer.

Year 10 Geography Excursion to Dolphin Reserve

On Tuesday 17 September, Year 10 Geography visited Dolphin Reserve in Currarong. Accompanied by Miss Axtens, Mrs Edwards, and Mr Flippence, the students explored the reserve and beach.

The focus of the day was to observe and analyse the management strategies employed to balance human activities with environmental conservation efforts in this unique coastal area. The students had the opportunity to observe firsthand how natural processes interact with human influences, offering a practical perspective on what they have been studying in class.

Some of the highlights of the day were the beautiful weather, the frolicking whales and fish & chips for lunch.

Students enjoyed examining the bones of sea creatures, rocks, and an array of shells. Tess even discovered a shark tooth! The opportunity to simply hang out on the beach and enjoy the playground added a fun and leisurely element to the excursion.

This field trip not only provided valuable insights into environmental management but also allowed students to engage in practical, real-world observations. By examining both the natural beauty and the impacts of human activity, students gained a deeper appreciation for the delicate balance required to maintain and protect our coastal environments.

Some highlights from Year 10 Work Experience

In Week 7, Year 10 went out on work experience. Work experience often delivers more than just professional skills; it also offers memorable moments and unique insights. Here’s a glimpse into standout experiences from a diverse group of individuals, each reflecting their highlights and key learnings from their recent work placements.

Tyler described his week as "the best week of my life," enjoying learning about the science and engineering of helicopter flight.

Constructing a retaining wall was the most satisfying part of Jackson’s stint with DP Landscaping. The apprenticeship offer he received demonstrates how work experiences can lead to significant career opportunities.

Xander worked across various locations with Altogether Group. While there were less glamorous aspects to his week, such as being sprayed with ‘grotty liquid’, he was able to be involved in technical tasks like doing UV checks and measuring chlorine levels in wastewater.

Adele’s placement at Nowra Veterinary Clinic was filled with memorable moments, from feeding a lamb to helping a dog bring up its stomach contents. Pizza on Friday was a great way to end the week.

Laurie’s automotive work involved engaging with car servicing and specialised equipment. He particularly enjoyed using the tyre life.

Emily’s role at William Campbell College was diverse, ranging from helping in the classroom to outdoor bush walks and gymnastics.

Harvey made a good impression on day 1 at Haven & Space, helping to troubleshoot their new phone system.  These stories highlight the diverse nature of work experiences, from technical skills to personal growth and memorable moments. Each experience contributes uniquely to career development, showcasing how varied and impactful work experience can be.

Thanks to Mr Clarke, Mr Flippence and Mr Asher for dropping in on our Year 10 students throughout the week.

Exciting and informative day: Nextstep at Albatross

Five enthusiastic Year 10 students enjoyed a fun and informative day doing the Nextstep program out at HMAS Albatross. The day included a morning session in the gym doing fitness, team building and problem solving. Next stop was an information session about careers in Defence. Then off to the simulators to try out their flying skills. Lunch was burgers in the Junior Officers Mess and then a final session on resume writing and preparing for interviews. It was a really worthwhile experience!

NSWCIS Secondary Athletics Championships

Hamish and Emily represented NCS and CSSA at the recent NSWCIS Secondary Athletics Championships.

For Hamish, this was his final opportunity to compete at NSWCIS Athletics (being in Year 12) and he delivered some fantastic results, securing 2nd place in 17 Boys Javelin and 3rd in the 17 Boys 3000m, achieving an impressive 18-second personal best. Hamish also competed in the 17 Boys 1500m and Discus events.

Emily competed in the 16 Girls Discus, Javelin and the 800m events, but unfortunately, she was recovering from an injury and couldn’t participate in her full schedule of events.

Both students are eagerly anticipating the 2024 NSW All Schools Championships during the upcoming school holidays. We wish them both well for this event.
