Dean of Middle Years

Transition & Outomes (Acting) - Amanda Bopf

Last Friday (5th September) the College welcomed onto campus, our incoming 2026 Year 7s, or as our Principal, Samantha Jensen described them, “The Graduates of 2031” !

It was a very full day for our youngest cohort, including testing, playing, crafting and making connections with new people.

The class of ‘2031’ is spread across 44 different primary feeder schools, so  ‘Welcome Day’ is critical to developing relationship, providing familiarity and safety, and building the foundations of the values of Mount Alvernia into our youngest students.

The anxiety often associated with the transition to high school was hopefully alleviated somewhat, with the relationship-building that happened on this occasion. At the start of the first session, I challenged the students to try and connect with three new people that they had not previously met. At the end of the day, most students were happily nodding when asked if they made these new connections.

The day began with parents and students engaging with some of the curricular and co-curricular offerings on display, such as our brilliant instrumental program (FCIP),  Arts and Technologies, sporting opportunities and an array of clubs and interest groups.

Our principal, Samantha then addressed the parent body, while their daughters began their activities rotations.

The incoming student captains also spent the day accompanying and assisting the year 6 students.

A sincere thanks goes to all the staff and students who contributed to the seamless success of the day. It absolutely takes a village to raise a child, and a whole College community to ‘raise a cohort’.

We look forward to welcoming our year 6s to the next event on their Mt A calendar, the Transition Twilight in October.
