SUSTAINABILITY FESTIVAL - A WORD FROM OUR LEADERS

Last Thursday the Sustainability Leaders and Year 3/4 reps all went to the Sustainability Festival at St Kilda Town Hall. It was a bunch of fun and we all learned so much!

We presented a workshop called The Green Machine and hopefully taught and inspired other students to put the right rubbish in the right bin.

We also showed everyone what rubbish can be recycled into!

We saw so many cool things including animal ecosystems, bugs and a gigantic snake called Tiny!

It was a great day of learning!

SEEDS OF CHANGE IN OUR SCHOOL GARDEN

The transition from Italian to Japanese productive garden has had a slow start.

Unseasonably warm weather along with some watering issues meant the seeds did not get the best start.  We were able to harvest some daikon radish, a hopeful sign for future crops.

Sayako Sensei said she enjoys sweeter daikon grated raw or thinly sliced in miso soup.

The current crop may prove a little bitter to eat in this style but pickling with extra sugar may prove tasty for this season.

Onwards and upwards is the feeling now for our last term in this garden.   Just before this term ends, the parent gardening team will prepare the soil with compost for (hopefully) a more successful and productive round 2.

Next term we look forward to our grades 3/4 gardeners helping with the Japanese garden summer crop.

Watch out for pumpkins, mizuna, burdock, spring onions, adzuki beans and komatsuna greens – all possibilities for our Ripper gardeners to trial growing this season.

Alsoin our Productive gardens by the foundation playground, we’ll be planting some old faves  we know grow well & the children love to eat - cherry toms, cucumbers & yummy strawberries 🍓.
