Year 5/6

Numeracy

Last week in numeracy, our 5/6 students examined the relationship between capacity, volume and mass. They learnt that 1cm3 = 1g = 1ml, and practiced converting each unit of measurement using their ever-growing knowledge of multiplication and division by powers of 10. To transfer our classroom-based learning to a hands-on (messy) experience, we made and weighed various amounts of MUD! The following day, we re-weighed the mass of the mud to calculate the volume of water lost overnight. Our final week of numeracy has involved learning about quantitative, qualitative, discrete and continuous data. We have collected our own data, classified it into aforementioned categories and used it to create bar graphs!

Literacy

In writing, the students have been working on writing book reviews for Walking the Boundaries, a novel that has been cherished and carefully examined throughout the year. We also recently completed our information reports. The students were given the task of following the structural and language features of an information report to research and write about a topic of their choice. Such features included opening statements, paragraphs, conclusions, formal language, third person, technical vocabulary and present tense verbs. The students were passionate about this project, and did a great job! Here are some examples:

Inquiry / Wellbeing

Further highlights of our last few weeks have included our final visit to Ellery House for the term to hang the beautiful paintings completed by our students and the Ellery House residents. The fortnightly visits to Ellery House have provided an opportunity for students to develop their communication skills, enhance a sense of community and togetherness, and build empathy and compassion. Every week, our students demonstrate great respect, responsibility, kindness and care for others as they engaged in craft and social-emotional activities with the residents.

We also loved spending time with the F/1/2 class playing board games. Some of the key learning intentions for this session included developing our sense of leadership and responsibility, enhancing our communication skills, and modelling literacy and numeracy skills to our F/1/2 peers. It's been a wonderful term in Grade 5/6.
