Junior School report

by Mr Nic Barca, Head of Junior School

On behalf of the Junior School, we’d like to wish Box Hill High School a very happy 95th anniversary. It’s an incredible milestone for our community and a chance to reflect on how far education has come.

Back in the 1930s, the entry point to secondary school was known as Form 1 and Form 2 (what we now call Year 7 and Year 8). Most students finished at Grade 8 with a Merit Certificate, but for those who continued on, the curriculum was quite different to what we know today. Students studied English, arithmetic (with a taste of algebra and geometry), geography, history, drawing and science, delivered in classrooms that were often very large and very strict.

It’s interesting to compare this with what our Year 7 and 8 students are learning now at Box Hill High School. Alongside their English, Maths, Humanities and Science, students explore creative and practical areas through Art, Technology, Music and Health/PE. The balance between core knowledge and broader experiences reflects how secondary education has evolved over the past 95 years.
