Resilience, Rights & Respectful Relationships

Respectful Relationships - Prep

Over the last few weeks in our Respectful Relationships lessons,  the Prep students talked about the people in their lives who help them, and the ways they can help others too.

We had some great conversations about who we go to when we’re feeling worried, like family members, teachers or friends. The students then drew two pictures. One showing someone helping them, and one showing how they help someone else. It was lovely to see their caring ideas and how proud they were to share them!

We even acted out some different situations and practised how to ask for help when we need it. Students were reminded that it’s always okay to ask for help from a teacher, a friend, or someone they trust.

Respectful Relationships Year 1

This term in Rights, Resilience and Respectful Relationships the Year 1 team have covered two topics. Earlier in the term we looked at Stress Management. Through this topic students learnt about:

  • Recognising stress and emotions: Students learnt to identify when they are feeling stressed or overwhelmed and what that might look or feel like in their body and behaviour.

  • Develop coping strategies: They will explore simple, age-appropriate techniques (like breathing exercises or taking a break) to calm themselves during difficult situations.

The second unit this term is Help Seeking. Through this topic students will learn to:

  • Practise solving simple interpersonal problems

  • Identify ways to care for others, including ways of making and keeping friends

  • Discuss the importance of seeking help when dealing with problems that are too big to solve alone

  • Practise seeking help from adults and peers.

Why Is This Important?

Stress is a normal part of life, especially as children grow and face new experiences. Helping children recognise signs of stress early and giving them tools to manage it supports their long-term mental health and builds confidence. These skills not only help in the classroom but also strengthen family relationships and support social growth.

Helping Students Build Coping Skills and Emotional Resilience

As part of our wellbeing and personal development focus, students will take part in activities that help them better understand their own feelings and how to manage stress in healthy ways. These lessons are designed to help children build lifelong skills that support both their emotional wellbeing and their relationships with others at school and at home.

Through this program, we aim to equip children with tools they can use now and in the future to handle life’s ups and downs with confidence and care.
