SCIENCE & ENGINEERING CHALLENGE

Oberon Competes at the State Final

On the 18th of June, a group of Year 9 and 10 students attended Deakin University to compete in the Regional Science and Engineering Challenge. We competed in activities that tested our problem-solving abilities such as building a wind turbine, an eco-house, and for the main event, building a bridge.  We all did our best and all groups ended up doing really well, so well that we also ended up winning the main event bridge challenge! Out of a two-day competition, we had the highest overall score from both days, beating all public and private schools from around Geelong and ultimately advancing us to the next round, the State Final.

After preparing hard, we then competed in Ballarat last week, on Wednesday the 3rd of September, joining the other winning schools from around Victoria at the state competition. It was great to see so many likeminded people who were just as passionate about science and engineering as we are, as well as having fun while competing.

The day was really fun but also challenging, and it gave us the chance to test our skills, think outside the box, and work together as a team. We’re really grateful to have had this opportunity, not only to compete but also to meet new people and learn from the experience. At the end of the day, the Oberon team was able to finish in fourth place across the whole state, a result we are all really proud of. Overall, it was a great experience, and we look forward to seeing Oberon have even more success in the competition in years to come.

We would also like to thank Techzone Geelong for their sponsorship of the event, helping with the cost of attending the State Final in support of STEM education.
