What’s in a Name? Exploring Letters and Early Writing
Over the past couple of weeks, we’ve noticed a growing curiosity among the children around writing their names and recognising the letters they begin with. This is a big step in their early literacy journey and shows us they are beginning to see the connection between spoken and written language. Some children have been pointing out the first letter of their name on signs and even in books. Others have started attempting to write the letters they know, proudly showing us their efforts. Recognising that this is a perfect window of interest, Ms Carr has begun offering a variety of playful and meaningful opportunities for the children to practise.
Over this year, we have been gently exposing and supporting each child’s growing confidence in understanding how letters form words, especially the most important word of all: their own name. This focus on names also connects beautifully to our inquiry into Belonging and making Authentic Connections. As children learn to recognise and write their own names, they are developing a stronger sense of identity and ownership over their space and belongings. It also helps them connect with one another, recognising a friend’s name, helping to find a labelled hat or bag, or celebrating when someone writes their name independently for the first time.
A few children have also enjoyed proudly sharing their name writing with their friends and standing up during group times. These moments show us how early literacy is not only a personal milestone but also a way to build social connection and shared celebration. This continued interest shows us that the children are not only developing their letter knowledge and fine motor skills, but they are also growing in confidence and pride in their own identity. It’s a joy to witness these early steps in writing, and we’ll keep supporting the children with playful and meaningful opportunities to practise throughout the term and beyond.
