From the Year 3 Classroom

Reading
This is our second week enjoying our new fiction text Charlotte’s Web, and this week we are introduced to Charlotte herself! Our focus this fortnight is the character traits of Fern, Wilbur and Charlotte, looking more deeply at their internal traits that define their personalities. We have also been working hard to improve our reading fluency with our Non-Fiction articles with a reading buddy.
It was such a joy to celebrate all things books on Friday. Here are some snaps of our Grade 3 superstars.
Writing
Students have completed their research for the animal information reports and are now up to publishing.
We now have moved on to planning and writing a narrative based on an unlikely friendship like that of Wilbur and Charlotte in our novel, Charlotte’s Web.
RE
We have completed our Source of Life Unit Parables of Jesus and have commenced our second unit for this term; Reaching Out & Serving Others. In this unit students will explore the concept of loving service and relate it to mission, based on Jesus’ example. They will also explore ways in which Christians serve other people, particularly those overseas.
Inquiry
We had a look at crimes and punishments in the 18th Century England, learning that even kids as young as Grade 3 students were handed down hefty sentences including transportation to what we now call, Australia. After investigating Captain Cook and the First Fleet, we explore the various First Contact perspectives of both convicts and the Indigenous Peoples.
Maths
Over the past few weeks, students have been sharpening their skills in reading both analog clocks and digital time. Many students found this topic challenging, and we suggest continuing to practise at home—especially with reading analog clocks, which
can take time to master. Playing time-related games, using wall clocks, or asking your child to tell the time during daily routines can make a big difference!
Students are diving into the world of three-dimensional (3D) objects! They’re learning to identify, name, describe, and sort shapes like cylinders, spheres, prisms, and pyramids. A big part of the learning involves building and comparing these shapes using hands-on materials and real-life examples. This unit builds on what students already know about 2D shapes and helps them deepen their understanding of how 3D objects work in the world around them.
Multiplication Masters
Well done to all students who are working hard on learning their times tables. A BIG ‘Congratulations’ to the following students who have passed all their times tables from 2x through to 12x.
