From the Year 1 Classroom

Hello Grade 1 Families,
What a fabulous day we had on Friday celebrating our Book Week 2025. The children looked fabulous in their outfits, and we loved spending time with the Year 3s! Check out these photos.
It was wonderful speaking with so many parents at our Learning Conversations last week. It was a great opportunity to celebrate student achievement and set some learning goals for Term 3.
Our R U OK Day Family Breakfast is fast approaching on the 11th of September. Thank you to those families who have already donated some Beauty and Self Care items for our raffle to be drawn at our family breakfast. Please continue to bring items in to fill the baskets, we are very grateful for your generosity.
Little reminder that we have Library every Monday. We’re not getting/seeing a lot of students remembering to bring their library bags and books in to return/reborrow. “No Library bag means no play” as of next Monday. Each classroom has a tub where students can hold their library bags and books once finished. Please encourage your child to read their library books then bring them back to the tub as soon as possible.
Our Athletics Carnival is on the 12th of September, and we welcome families and friends to attend this special day with us.
Please remember that it is now a school rule for all children to wear their hats when outside during recess and lunch. Please ensure your child has the OWN hat and that this is clearly labelled.
We were very lucky last week to visit Bunnings and get creative making something for someone special in our lives. A big thank you to Tim who gave up his time and was absolutely fantastic with the children.
Literacy
This coming fortnight in InitiaLit we will be looking at contractions, such as I’m, couldn’t, wouldn’t, shouldn’t, can’t, won’t, don’t and didn’t. We will look closely at words with the ‘ear’ and ‘eer’ spelling patterns.
A few parents have asked for some extension words to practice in place of Tricky Words, so here are some challenging words based on our phoneme focus or ‘ear’ and ‘eer’.
cheering | peered | steering | reindeer | volunteer |
appeared | earrings | weary | disappear | fearless |
Maths
We are continuing to explore the concepts of sharing and grouping. Students are using counters to create equal groups and to see if there are any left over.
If you’d like to play some math games at home, ask your child about the card games we’ve been playing at school — I think they might even beat you!
Religion
In Religion, students will be exploring the concept of caring for God’s creation. Through stories, discussion, and reflection, they’ll consider how we can show respect and responsibility for the world around us. This learning encourages students to think deeply about their role as stewards of creation and how small actions can make a big difference.
Inquiry – Living Things
This term in Inquiry, students are building on their understanding of living and non-living things by learning how to care for pets. We are exploring the basic needs of animals—like food, water, shelter, and play—and are going to create a class pet shop to compare different pets. We will also have fun designing a class pet out of playdough and filling in a profile about what it needs to survive!
