Level Six

Literacy

In Reading, we turned our attention toinformation reports, unpacking the structure and language features that make them effective. Students explored how authors use subheadings, technical vocabulary, and diagrams to organise and explain information clearly. Together, we compared strong and weak examples of reports, discussing why some were more effective than others and identifying the key features of high-quality writing.

In Writing, students put this knowledge into practice by creating their own information reports on a topic of their choice. They worked on crafting clear topic sentences, selecting precise vocabulary, and using connectives to ensure their writing flowed cohesively. A key focus was on writing in the present tense, maintaining an objective tone, and avoiding bias. Students also compared examples and non-examples of information reports to refine their understanding of the genre.

Numeracy

In Numeracy, our focus has been on building a deeper understanding of time and probability through real-world applications. Students explored time duration by creating timetables and planning out days, using examples such as public transport schedules. They considered factors that might affect plans, including delays or changes, and applied this to scenarios involving budgeting and costing for a day. Alongside this, we investigated probability and chance, looking at both theoretical and experimental probability. Students designed their own ‘unfair games’ that appeared fair on the surface, which led to rich discussions about how probability can influence outcomes and how games are not always as balanced as they seem.

Deakin Science

In Weeks 6–9, the Deakin students continued their placement in our classrooms, leading even more engaging science sessions. We explored the concepts ofreversible and irreversible changes through hands-on experiments, which helped us understand how materials can change in different ways. From melting butter to mixing vinegar and bicarbonate soda, students had fun predicting outcomes, testing ideas, and discussing what they discovered. It was a fantastic opportunity to learn in an interactive way, and everyone enjoyed working alongside the Deakin teachers.

Integrated Studies

This term, students explored the history of Australian colonisation and demonstrated their learning through creative projects. They had the opportunity to engage in a variety of activities, producing board games, timelines, and even short plays. These tasks allowed students to think critically about historical events while expressing their understanding in imaginative ways, fostering both creativity and deeper engagement with the content.

Student Voice - Highlights of the Term

Chloe M 6C - This term has been very fun because we have written our own First Nations inspired Creation stories, and also got to draw a picture to go with it.

Kate H 6C - My highlight was welcoming new students into 6C and hanging out with all my friends.

Radmehr P 6C - My highlight was learning about information reports and creating our own. Also, writing our First Nations inspired Creation stories, and creating the images.

Leila Y 6C - My favourite things from this term were making the Integrated projects with my partner which was really fun, as well as the Creation stories because we got to write our own and it took a lot of effort and time.

Mika N 6C - The Colonial Australia project was my highlight because we got to learn about what it was like back then in Australia and how the British came to Australia and what they did.

Eric C 6C - My highlight was Deakin Science because it was fun doing experiments and learning about chemical change.

Roxana 6W - Deakin Science was really fun, we got to make butter and the teachers were really nice.

Evelyn 6W - The Water Safety day was my favourite part of the term, it was great being in the water and getting to swim with my friends.

Adrina 6W - My favourte part of this term was completing the information reports. I got to research a topic of my choice and to inform others about it. I also enjoyed doing the integrated project and putting everything we learnt about Australian Colonisation into a project.
