Level Five

The Level Five students have had a very busy Term Three with a range of programs and activities happening across the last few weeks. Most recently, we had our Human Development sessions where the students learned about all of the changes that happen during puberty. We are also having a visit from a police officer on the last day of term, and have been learning about Cyber Safety and online media literacy.
Reading
Throughout the term, reading lessons have focused on strengthening students’ comprehension skills. In particular, students have been learning to summarise texts by identifying and recording the main ideas and supporting details. They have also developed the ability to make meaningful text connections, linking their reading to personal experiences, other texts, and broader world contexts. Additionally, students have begun extending their vocabulary knowledge, which is enhancing both their reading comprehension and their ability to use precise and varied language in their writing.
Writing
In Writing this semester, Level 5 students explored a variety of text types to build their skills and creativity. They began with procedural writing, where they created clear and detailed instructions for making a weather station. Students then moved on to information reports, researching and presenting facts about different natural disasters with a focus on structure, accuracy, and formal language. To finish the term, students engaged with poetry, experimenting with descriptive language, imagery, and rhythm to express their ideas in creative and personal ways.
Maths
This term in Mathematics, we explored a range of important topics. We solved time problems using both 12- and 24-hour formats, and applied our knowledge to real-life worded problems. In algebra, we worked on problem-solving by finding unknown values and using equations. Our money unit focused on creating and managing budgets, helping us practise financial decision-making. In space, we investigated Cartesian planes, plotting coordinates and exploring patterns. We also collected, organised, and represented both numerical and categorical data, building different types of graphs to interpret information.
Theme
Our topic this term was Think Global, Act Local and had a strong focus on Geography, Mapping and Natural Disasters. Our final project was to research a natural disaster and write an information text. This was then presented as a poster including pictures (with captions), a bibliography, and other graphic elements. We also learned the states and capitals of Australia - the students in Grade 5 should be able to name these easily now!
Student Voice
Chanel 5H - My favourite thing about this term was writing. I liked how we made a poster with our information reports. I learnt how to make a bibliography and how to use pictures with captions to describe our work.
Mia 5H - My favourite part of the term was the natural disasters posters which mixed creativity with learning new facts about our chosen natural disaster.
Farah 5P- I enjoyed the Science Incursion because it taught me a lot more about Science.
Maya 5P - In reading this term, we learned how to summarise both fiction and non-fiction texts. I got better with practice and this skill really helped during our Theme unit because I could read information texts and then make a short summary that was easy to remember.
Arnoosha 5K - I enjoyed Kahoot - it was fun to do.
Shayan 5H - This term my favourite event was District Sports because it was awesome to compete against other schools.
Quincy 5K - I loved the Book Week Dress Up Day and that I could be very crazy saying 'I'M FIRING MY LAZER!!!'
Eva 5P- I loved doing the human development program this term. I liked Kyla and she taught us very well.
Jason 5A - This term I learned how to summarise when I’m reading. We practised with stories and also with information texts. At first it was hard to only choose the important parts, but now I’m much better at it. Summarising really helped in our natural disasters unit because I could read a big text and then make it shorter in my own words.
Ariyan 5H - I really enjoyed house athletics and it was the best to compete in different events for our houses.
Lucas 5P- I really liked doing the Science Expo. We found out that every flower has a number of petals equivalent to one of the numbers in the Fibonacci Sequence.
Diana 5K
I loved it when I went to Sovereign Hill - I loved hunting for gold and I loved this term. Thank you Mrs Keen!!!
