In M21, Year Fours have been learning about equivalent fractions.
We have been learning different strategies to solve multiplication problems. We practised using the vertical algorithm and learned how to break apart larger numbers, which is called partitioning, to solve two-digit by one-digit problems.
We applied our understanding of different strategies to a challenging task where each shape had a secret number, and we had to work out what it was using multiplication clues.
The students were asked what strategy they used to solve the tricky challenge.
Ava
My strategy was to choose a random number to begin with and see if it would work. I kept a record of my work in my book, and I used a calculator to check my answers.
Jeremy and Davian
My strategy was to try a random number and test it. If it didn’t work, we would go back and try a different number. We recorded our numbers on the whiteboards next to a drawing of the shape.
