St Augustine’s Shine in North Queensland Streetsmart T20 Final
The North Queensland Streetsmart T20 Final saw St Augustine’s College intermediate cricket team take on Ignatius Park College, Townsville in what was expected to be a tough contest. Ignatius Park, reputed for their strong batting lineup, won the toss and elected to bat first, but it was Saints who set the tone early.
Opening bowlers Brodie Masina and Edward Hammerton delivered with precision and pace, immediately putting the opposition on the back foot. By the end of the fourth over, Ignatius Park were reeling at 2/16. The pressure never relented, as Saints maintained disciplined bowling and backed it up with sharp, committed fielding. Two crucial runouts added to the momentum, and at the close of their 20 overs, Ignatius Park could only post 7/120 – a total that reflected Saints’ dominance in the field.
The chase began with fireworks as Harvey Rees played a blistering knock of 35 from just 20 balls, giving the team the perfect platform. From there, Hugh Ferguson anchored the innings brilliantly, finishing unbeaten on 37. Supported by calm partnerships and positive intent, Saints reached 3/121 in the 16th over, sealing a comprehensive victory.
The boys displayed outstanding spirit throughout – encouraging and supporting one another, embodying the true values of the College. While there will be no state final this year, and Saints are unable to defend their state title, the College community can be immensely proud of the team’s efforts and achievements.
A fitting reminder that Saints cricket continues to set the standard for teamwork, determination and pride.
Futsal FNQ School Titles
St Augustine’s entered teams in both the U13 and Open divisions at the FQ North Queensland Futsal Finals in Townsville.
Our Opens team were dominant throughout the pool rounds, recording emphatic victories over Bentley Park College (11–1) and Kirwan SHS (13–3), before defeating Southern Cross Catholic College (5–2) in the semi-final to book a place in the Grand Final. Facing rivals Cairns SHS, the boys maintained their momentum to secure a convincing 9–5 win and claim the championship title.
The U13s also enjoyed a successful tournament. They opened with a hard-fought 5–4 win over Chanel College, followed by a 6–2 victory against Annandale Christian College. A narrow 3–2 loss to Cairns SHS and a 4–4 draw with Gilroy Santa Maria College set up a rematch with Cairns SHS in the Grand Final. In another close contest, the boys went down 2–1 in a game that could have gone either way.
Both teams have now qualified for the National Titles in Brisbane later this year. Thank you to our coach, Mr Cristian Couto from CC Futbol Academy, and staff members Ms Tranter and Ms Rettke for accompanying the boys on the trip.
BDO Hockey
St Augustine’s entered three teams in the BDO Hockey Tournament. Our Senior team went through the day undefeated to claim the Senior competition title, while our Junior team also performed strongly, finishing as runners-up.
The Saints 2 Team, made up of students from Year 8 to Year 12—including several new to hockey—competed admirably in Division 2 of the BDO Secondary Hockey Tournament on Tuesday 26 August. They drew 1-1 with Newman (goal by Piumal Warshamana), 0-0 with TAS, 1-1 with RSC (goal by Archie Ferguson), and 1-1 in the 3rd/4th playoff against TAS (goal by Ben Fairbairn), finishing equal 3rd overall. Well done to all the boys for their great spirit and sportsmanship throughout the day.
Walkathon
Well done to all students for your participation in the annual Walkathon. It was a great community day where student behaviour was exceptional. Unfortunately, the staff couldn’t prevail in the staff v students basketball game meaning that the students have taken a 2-1 lead ahead of our futsal game. Fundraising will close at the end of Week 9, donations can be made at the Walkathon link.
Year 8 Rugby League
The St Augustine’s Year 8 Rugby League team faced Trinity Bay in the semi-final, in the final game of the season. Fielding an understrength team due to club finals and injuries, the boys ripped in and showed a lot of fight to limit Trinity Bay to 12 points in the first half. The team fought hard but unfortunately lacked the firepower to challenge throughout the game.
Their was a lot of promise throughout the season, finishing in a respectable third place. The boys are looking forward to playing games against other schools to finish the year in Term 4.
JSS
The JSS season is well underway with Saints teams making a strong start to retaining our crown as the overall boys and champion school. After a successful round against St Mary's where we won 3games, drawing football and losing a tight volleyball match 2 sets to 1. Currently, our AFL and Touch teams are sitting in first place, our football and Basketball teams are in second place while our volleyball team is 6th and looking to climb the ladder.

These congratulations must also be extended to all students who placed in events or got in and had a dig as this is what the carnival is all about. Finally, thank you to the staff who ensured that the day ran seamlessly. A special thank you must be extended to Mr Kirk Donaldson, Mrs Tracy Lammert and Mrs Tash Falge for their time and effort put into the carnival.
