Charlie Lawrence – College Vice Captain
In my five years at St Augustine’s, I have never sat in a room filled with more emotion, empathy and passion. Tommy Herschell transformed our classroom into a space where vulnerability was not only accepted but embraced. We were no longer students, we were brothers, standing shoulder to shoulder without the weight of expectation and fear of judgement. As we approach our valedictory ceremony, this experience felt especially profound as it reminded us that strength is not found in achievements, but in honesty, compassion and love. I will carry those two hours with me long after I leave the school gates, and for that I am extremely grateful to Tommy.
It's also important to acknowledge the ambassadors that were in the room. Mitch Marsh, Alex Carey, Nathan Ellis, Andrew McDonald, George Bailey and Andre Borovec all made an appearance and sat in on what was a particularly moving session. Their presence was felt among the students, and we hope that as men of Saints, we left a lasting impression on our heroes. I truly hope in future, other students have the privilege of taking part in a Tommy Herschell’s presentation.
*Find Ya Feet, founded by Tommy Herschell, provides young men with a platform to discuss their struggles, ask for help and ultimately "build better blokes". The organisation runs workshops in schools, sporting clubs and in corporation to promote vulnerability and open communication among young men, aiming to improve their mental health and wellbeing.
Does Saints have some mathematicians in the making?
Our students proudly participated in the Queensland Association of Mathematics Teachers (QAMT) Years 7 and 8 Quiz last month, with two teams representing us in the competition. Out of all the schools involved, St Augustine’s two teams were the only ones to qualify for Round 2. Both teams showed great collaboration, problem-solving and determination throughout the event.
Our teams tied for 2nd and 3rd place, demonstrating the depth of talent and commitment among our students. These results are a testament to their passion for mathematics, and we are looking forward to Round 2 next term.
