Helmets Save Lives – Protect Your Child’s Brain

Your child’s brain is their most valuable asset. It controls everything they do – thinking, learning, moving and feeling. Once damaged, it cannot be replaced.

Falls from bikes, scooters and skateboards happen quickly, even to careful riders. Without a helmet, a single knock to the head can cause serious injury, leading to problems with memory, movement, speech and behaviour – sometimes for life.

In Victoria, it’s the law for children (and adults) to wear an approved helmet when riding and you can be fined for not wearing a helmet. But more importantly, a helmet greatly reduces the risk of life-changing head injuries.

Some children wear headdresses — like a patka or topknot — that make standard helmets uncomfortable or impossible to fit. Fortunately, new creative solutions, such as multi-sport helmets designed with a dome shape to accommodate these hairstyles while still meeting safety standards, are now available.

Please make it a firm rule: Your child must wear a correctly fitted, approved helmet every time they ride — no exceptions, no “just this once.” This simple act protects their brain today and safeguards their future.
