Visual Arts News

Hello Families,

The past few weeks in the art room have been filled with creativity and excitement! Students from all year levels have been exploring new projects, trying out various techniques, and growing their artistic abilities. It's been wonderful to witness their energy and imagination in action.

Prep

Prep students learned how to overlap lines they already know, like squiggles, castle lines and swirls, to create a piece of art. By practising how to place one line on top of another, students developed control and coordination in their drawing. We also learned to paint the rainbow in the background with correct colour order—red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. This activity helped build fine motor skills, colour recognition, and an early understanding of patterns in art.

Grade One

Grade One students explored the art element of colours, lines. They learned how to draw self-portraits by looking closely at the features of our faces and carefully drawing what we see. They are now currently exploring the element space , learning how to create a background for our lamb pictures by drawing hills and fences.

Grade Two

Grade Two students explored lines and shapes by creating self-portraits with secondary colours. Using secondary colours prompted these students to draw on their prior knowledge. This activity helped them recognize the shapes in their facial features and learn how to represent themselves through different shapes in their drawings.

Grade Three

Grade Three students explored texture and value, completing a mixed media artwork by incorporating buttons into their designs creating a tree inspired by the Cherry Blossom. They then focused on space and shape to create a comic style pop art collage that they are still working on, using vibrant colours, patterns and text to express an idea.

Grade Four

Grade Four students are continuing with their cactus sketch, learning techniques like hatching, cross-hatching, and stippling. As part of this process, we practiced pencil shading, smudging, and blending to add depth and texture to our drawing. We focused on using the grey lead pencil to capture the shapes and details of the cacti, while paying close attention to proportion and the placement of objects in the foreground and background. This helps create a sense of space and realism in our artwork.

Grade Five

Grade Five students were learning to use research to create artwork inspired by a country or landmark. They created an envelope with a landmark emerging from it, symbolising a connection to a special place in the world. Grade Five students focused on the shape and structure of the landmark to make it recognisable and accurate. To enhance the overall look, students applied shading and small details with vibrant colours, helping to bring the scene to life and make it more engaging for the viewer during their presentation in small groups.

Grade Six

Grade Six students have finished their 3D portraits and they look great! This week the students are using their chalk pastel techniques to create a galaxy background that looks colourful and blended. They will be layering different chalk pastels to build up rich, vibrant colours and blend them smoothly to create the soft, glowing look of a galaxy. Grade Six students are focusing on how the colours transition into one another to create a realistic space effect. also paying attention to texture—making sure parts of the background look soft and cloud-like, while the main features have more defined edges to create contrast and visual interest.
