Grade 6 Community News

We have reached the halfway point of Term 3 and are just as shocked as you as to how quickly that has happened!

Reading

This week the students have started reading a new text, ‘Boy Overboard’ , a young adult novel by Morris Gleitzman that tells the story of Jamal and Bibi, two courageous siblings who flee Afghanistan under Taliban rule. Their journey is filled with danger, hope, and resilience as they navigate treacherous seas and the challenges of seeking asylum in Australia. The students have been engrossed in the text so far, learning about character development, setting and author word choice. The students will shift their focus to analysing significant events in the novel in the coming weeks.

Writing

In Writing, the students have been creating character profiles using ‘show, don’t tell’. A technique used to engage the reader by giving them descriptions of the characters actions and thoughts rather than explicitly telling the reader what they are like. Next week, the students will closely examine the editing process of the writing cycle.

Maths

In Maths, the students have explored multiplying a dividing by powers of 10. They have also used this skill to make reasonable estimations. Next week, Year 6 maths will consist of measurement. More specifically, converting between units of measure and identifying equivalent units of measurement.
