Grade 3 Community News

Dear Year 3 Families,

Weeks 5 and 6 were full of fun and creativity in Year 3! Our students shone in the Bastille Day fashion show, looking absolutely amazing in their costumes. The excitement didn’t stop there; students eagerly explored the Book Fair and joined in a variety of activities throughout the week. The creativity on display was spectacular, and it was wonderful to see everyone so engaged. The Year 3 teachers also got into the spirit, dressing up as characters from our class novel, Matilda. A huge congratulations to Mr Martin and Mr Shaw, whose spot-on impersonation of Miss Trunchbull won them the Best Dressed Teacher prize!

Knowledge Building Unit (Reading and Writing)

In Knowledge Building, Year 3 students have recently completed their study of The Iron Man by Ted Hughes, exploring its exciting story and themes. In Week 6, they are beginning an engaging new unit on Ancient Rome, where they will discover the fascinating history, culture, and achievements of this remarkable civilization. Students have been practicing their reading fluency each day by reading a passage about the text with a partner and on Wednesdays writing a short summary. At home, you can support your child’s understanding by asking your child questions about what they have learned about Ancient Rome so far.

In Writing, Year 3 students are continuing to refine their report writing skills, building on the progress they have made so far this term. They are applying their growing knowledge of Ancient Rome to create another detailed information report, allowing them to practise organizing facts, developing clear explanations, and presenting their ideas in a structured and engaging way. This unit provides an excellent opportunity for students to combine their historical learning with their writing skills, further enhancing both their understanding and their ability to communicate information effectively.

Numeracy

In Numeracy, Year 3 students have been exploring 3D objects, developing their understanding of shapes, edges, faces, and vertices. Through hands-on activities and visual investigations, students are learning to identify, classify, and describe a variety of three-dimensional shapes, building important spatial awareness and geometric reasoning skills. This engaging unit encourages curiosity and problem-solving as students connect their mathematical knowledge to the world around them.

  • We ask students to maintain their reading nights by reading for 20 minutes each school day and then record their reading time in their student reading journals to track their progress. Young readers who read frequently develop essential reading skills.
  • We thank and remind families to continue supporting their children by charging their iPads and bringing their headphones ready for each school day.
