Grade 5 & 6
Term 1 Week 4
It has been a very busy and exciting start to the year in the Senior Learning Community!
In Maths, students have been focusing on whole numbers. We have been developing our understanding of place value, operations, and problem-solving strategies to strengthen number knowledge and confidence.
In Literacy, we have started our new class text - Leo and Ralph by Peter Carnavas. Students are exploring the features of narratives, including character development, setting, and plot structure. We also have a focus of learning about different suffixes and how adding them to base words can change meaning and grammatical function. This has helped students expand their vocabulary and improve their writing.
We have just begun our new Biological Science inquiry unit - Life Finds A Way. This unit explores the big questions: How do living things survive and adapt - and how does this give us hope for the future of life on Earth? Students will investigate adaptations, survival strategies, and the resilience of living organisms in changing environments.
This week, students participated in our Courage and Crowns and Courage and Codes sessions with Megan and Matt. These sessions focused on understanding and expressing emotions in healthy ways. Students learnt practical strategies for managing big feelings, resolving conflict respectfully, building confidence, and navigating social situations. They explored ways to communicate clearly, show empathy, and make positive choices when faced with challenges. We are already seeing the benefits of these sessions in the way students are communicating with each other.
We also enjoyed Swimming Sports with St B’s. We are incredibly proud of all students who entered events and demonstrated determination and resilience. It was wonderful to see such strong sportsmanship, especially the enthusiastic cheering and encouragement shown to peers.
Finally, thank you to the parents who attended our Get To Know You meetings. These conversations are invaluable and greatly support us in building strong partnerships and understanding your children as learners.
