High Potential and Gifted Education
At FGHS, we are committed to identifying and supporting students with high potential through our High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) opportunities. These programs are designed to challenge and engage students across four key domains: intellectual, creative, social-emotional, and physical. By offering specialized opportunities, we ensure our high-potential students are encouraged to reach their full potential and excel in all areas of development.
In 2025, we are excited to offer a range of dynamic activities specifically tailored to engage and support our HPGE students. These initiatives provide opportunities for growth, collaboration, and exploration, helping our students develop not only academically but also socially, emotionally, and physically.
Some of the exciting HPGE events running this year include:
Art Matters
This special program offers HPGE students from Years 7 to 10 the unique opportunity to explore and refine their artistic talents. Selected participants will have the chance to experiment with new artistic techniques and express their personal vision through their artwork. Throughout the event, students will receive expert guidance as they work at the renowned Maitland Regional Gallery.
Guitar, Bass Guitar & Drums Lessons
We are thrilled to offer an exciting opportunity for selected students who have demonstrated potential in the creative arts to receive specialized music lessons in guitar, bass guitar, and drums. These lessons, which will run throughout the entire year, are designed to nurture and develop the musical talents of our students, providing them with the skills and confidence to excel.
Inquisitive Minds
Inquisitive Minds is a dynamic program running in Term 2, specifically designed for 10 to 20 selected Year 8 students. This engaging initiative focuses on hands-on activities and problem-solving workshops that aim to enhance students' attitude toward math.
Tournament of Minds
Tournament of Minds is a team competition of up to 7 students who complete a challenge and present their solution to a panel of judges.
Transition Day Workshops
We are overjoyed to announce the upcoming Transition Day Workshops, where our students will take the lead in guiding primary school students through their first taste of high school life. Throughout the year, selected students will have the opportunity to design and run mini workshops aimed at helping these younger students feel comfortable, confident, and excited about their transition to high school.
State Drama Camp
Selected High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) students will have the exclusive opportunity to attend the State Drama Camp—an immersive experience designed to take their drama skills to the next level. This camp offers a series of intensive workshops led by expert tutors from the performing arts industry, covering all major aspects of drama.
Debating
The Premier's Debating Challenge is open to all NSW government schools with the aim of developing the reasoning and public speaking skills of students from Years 5 to 12.
Book club
Book club aims to extend students' hunger, passion and knowledge of reading. This program runs every Tuesday at recess in A9, bring a book along or read one of ours. Book club supports the Premier's Reading Challenge.
English writing competition
Will occur in Term 2, great prizes to be won! Compose an imaginative or discursive response on a topic yet to be announced.
We are proud to continue fostering an environment where every HPGE student is challenged, inspired, and supported on their journey of excellence. Stay tuned for more updates on these enriching opportunities!
