Chatham Happenings

PE Update

There have been two large sporting events this term at Chatham Primary School. This year we have started with the House Swimming Carnival. This event ran smoothly with students doing their absolute best in their swimming events and cheering each other and their House on to building school spirit and togetherness. This allowed 13 of our swimmers to earn positions in our swimming squad who went on to represent Chatham at the Kooyong District Swimming Carnival. These students conducted themselves with aplomb and showed the values of respect and resilience throughout the event.

One of our students, Katrina Poon, swam her absolute best on the day in the difficult 50m Butterfly event and placed second, thus qualifying her for the Boroondara Division Swimming Carnival held on the 5th March at the Boroondara Swimming Complex.  She competed extremely well at this event and finished 5th overall in the Division for the 12/13 Girls’ Butterfly, with a time of 50.83 seconds.

The second sporting event over the term was hosted by Liam Hoy from the Camberwell Dragons Basketball club, who attended Chatham on the 19th and 20th of March to run basketball clinics aimed at both introducing and upskilling students in their basketball skills. This included passing with 'chicken wings', dribbling the ball, shooting with your elbow below the ball 'in the pocket' and finishing the shot with the follow through in 'the swan'. They finished these clinics with a shooting game called ‘The Titanic’ where each team competed to be the last team still sinking baskets. This has been an engaging and valuable experience for all students from Foundation all the way through to the Year 5/6. This has been a great event for the first term with many students asking about the upcoming Term 2 Cross-Country event, with plans for preparation training well underway.
