Maths Week

The Maths Department had a lovely time celebrating all the wonders of maths with students last week. We ran PCG activities aimed at getting to know the Maths Department a little better. The winning PCGs were Miss Raynor’s L9 and Mr Edwards’s M9.

Monday’s challenge was to use 4 fours and any operations to make your locker code. I was blown away by the number of entries sent in. Keep an eye out in CQU as I will display the correct entries. The senior winner was Sulaiman Barzangi and Junior winner was Harshika Santhakumar. On Thursday students were asked to send in misleading graphs they have seen in the media and then ask to comment on why they were misleading. The winner was Alice Foster. The lunch time activities included board games, origami, crochet, Rubik’s Cubes workshop, a puzzle contest and a Rubik’s Cube contest.

We completed the week with our annual Maths Quiz Night which is always a delight to be a part of.  It was so lovely to see everyone working together. The winning team was Cate Williams, Naima Flavell, Abigail Jones, Zara Jones, Taylor Rhodes and Bintou Toure. Maths Week is always a highlight for us each year. We are so thankful for all the students who want to be a part of it. Miss Hewitt is now taking sign ups for Have Sum Fun.  Thank you Mr Truong who helped organise the week.

SOAR in academic extension

OzCLO
OzCLO

This week Year 7 and 8 SOAR academic extension students showcased their linguistic prowess by competing in the Australian Computational and Linguistics Olympiad (OzCLO). Under the expert guidance of language specialist Tamsin Sykiotis, students formed teams of four to tackle intriguing language-analysis problems. The First Round, a two-hour competition held on 5 March, challenged participants to develop innovative strategies to solve puzzles.

OzCLO, now in its 28th year, invites talented students from senior and junior secondary schools who excel in logic, languages, and problem-solving. The competition, coordinated by a team of linguists from Australian universities, attracts over 2500 students annually. It provides a platform for students with a keen interest in English, languages, maths, or computing to test their skills and enjoy the thrill of linguistic challenges. Congratulations to all our participants
