1/2 Learning News

Hello families,
Another busy week at St. Joey's with Shrove Tuesday, Ash Wednesday Mass and our Opening School Mass. We also began our 'Choose-Day' groups on Tuesday afternoon and by all accounts, everyone is enjoying their chosen activity. With gardening, running club, yoga, cooking, Aged Care visit and fishing as the options, how could we go wrong? I'm looking forward to touching base to discuss your children's start to 2025 next week, if you haven't booked a learning conversation, please do so on PAM/SIMON Everywhere.
Literacy
This fortnight in Initial Lit, we have been focussing on the digraph (2 letters that make one sound) 'th'. We have explored how it can say two different sounds, using the words thumb and feather as a way to distinguish between the two. We felt our jaw, neck and breath to see how our mouths move differently for each of the sounds and we discovered one is voiced and the other is not. We also continued to word on our tricky words, focussing on those with 'th' at the beginning such as this, that and them.
Mathematics
As we move into our Addition and Subtraction unit of Maths, we re-visited place value - reading, creating and representing numbers in different ways. We used MAB to make specific 2, 3 and 4 digit numbers, played dice games where we had to determine which section to put each number in, in order to create the highest number possible and also worked on how to read 4 and 5 digit numbers.
Games Afternoon
Last Friday we had an amazing time connecting with others during our games afternoon. Our 5/6 leaders set up games in 3 of the classrooms and the children were able to move between each, & play games of their choice. We had Connect 4, Jenja, Twister, Uno and quoists, just to name a few. Most pleasing was seeing great sportsmanship and support of one another as we learnt new games, as well as the children spending time with lots of students from different year levels.
