Applied Studies

This year the TAS KLA will focus on student engagement and feedback to form our newsletter with each term focusing on a different subject area. 

 

This Term, students in Stage 4 will learn about the four main focus areas of Technology Mandatory:

 

Mixed Materials

Students are looking forward to making a laser light project using the laser cutter. They will also have the opportunity to utilise the sewing machines to create a stuffed monster. 

 

Year 8 students have reflected on what they have enjoyed so far: 

 

Jonty Mason - "I have enjoyed the creative process of making my own tech project with the help of my teacher and the freedom to design it however I want.”

 

 

Seb Mclean - “Seeing all the things in the workshop and being told about safety and how everything works and what to do and not do."

 

 

Chloe Lieschke - “I have enjoyed Tech Mandatory because its a chance to show our creativity and tech skills through laser cutting, and 3D printing.”

 

 

Patel Jenil - “I have enjoyed using laser cutters and choosing our own designs for our projects.”

 

 

Agriculture and Food

Students will be learn about the farm to plate process and growing a range of crops and then cooking with them.

 

Year 7 students have shared their highlights:

 

Frankie Michel - “I love cooking with my friends.” 

 

 

 

Braxton Halls - “Being able to cook new foods and try new things and being able to find things from the farm to make into a healthy burgers.”

 

 

Ski Ofeina Loseli - “The fun and enjoyment in eating after pracs.”

 

 

Ryder Seaman - "I have absolutely enjoyed cooking a lot this year. My favourite part has been prac because it has been so much fun to be able to cook in class”

 

Engineering

Students will be required to consider the engineering science behind making and testing the limits of a catapult model.

 

Year 8 are most looking forward to:

 

Samantha Mooney - “Making catapults with lots of materials and modifying them.” 

 

 

Marcus Daniel - “Building and analysing the buildings that my group has made.”

 

 

Charlotte McDonnell -  “I have enjoyed the opportunity to research and find out more about engineering and how engineering helps us in our everyday life.”

 

 

Joshua Flagg - “I liked how it was self paced and there were practicals and building every lesson.”

 

 

Digital Technologies 

This focus area will require students to consider their digital citizenship as well as using a range of technologies to develop projects.

 

Year 7 students have shared their highlights:

 

Emma Ferguson - “How fun it is to create stuff online, learning RGB pixels because I am very familiar with them due to digital art.”

 

 

Rex Benecke - “Learning all of the different ways you could get scammed online.”

 

 

Isabel Baggio - “Using computers and learning about coding, and pixels.”

 

 

 

Michael Galvin - “Playing with the different apps and sites to see how they work and using Adobe Illustrator.”
