Religious Education

Year 7 students have started the year with the unit Initiation and Belonging. Students have been exploring what it means to belong to various groups in the community such as family, sporting groups and the school community at large. They have also been developing their understanding of Catholic beliefs and practices such as the sacraments of initiation in The Catholic Church. Students have been sharing their ideas about God in a very thoughtful and insightful manner and they have enjoyed exploring a variety of  Bible stories this term.

Year 8 students are exploring the concept of Forgiveness in their unit on Reconciliation as they examine this important Christian teaching. Through a range of scripture passages, they have explored Jesus’ teachings on forgiveness, and contemplated how we can model ourselves on his example in our own lives. Students have also been studying the words of  Pope Francis as powerful and inspirational messages on forgiveness in our contemporary world. Some classes had the opportunity to host Seminarian Brother Patrick as he shared his own learning on Catholic reconciliation, and we look forward to viewing students' Assessment Tasks very soon- the creation of a storybook which teaches children about the importance of forgiveness and reconciliation in relationships.

Year 9 are currently working on the unit Morality, Justice and Peace, with a strong focus on moral development, human rights and contributions to peace in society. Jesus’ teachings and Church doctrine on morality have been explored, as well as other life influences on values. Students are being encouraged to consider their own moral development and how it aligns with current theories through exploration of a variety of ethical scenarios. The Assessment Task this term allows students to research a significant individual of their choice, who has contributed to morality, justice and peace in society. Students will then write and record a podcast interview with this person, and we are very much looking forward to listening to their finished products!

Christianity in the Middle Ages is the Term 1 unit for our Year 10 students, as they explore the dramatic changes within Christianity during this time. The impact of historical figures such as Constantine the Great, and societal elements such as the Feudal System and Church hierarchy have been examined. Major historical and religious events such as the Crusades and traditional pilgrimage have also been explored. Students have enjoyed developing their own itinerary for a pilgrimage of their choice, showcasing their plans to their peers. Currently, students are undertaking a research project investigating key Christians of the Middle Ages.

Year 11 Studies of Religion students have delved into The Nature of Religionand Beliefs as they commence their senior studies. Students have developed an understanding of religion as a concept, its purpose and common characteristics, as well as the notion of religious and non-religious worldviews. It has been wonderful to see Year 11 grow their awareness of the diversity of religion and its impact on Australian society. Students have also learnt about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Spiritualities, including vital aspects such as the Dreaming, land and identity. Year 11 were fortunate to experience an engaging and insightful presentation on Wiradjuri culture and spirituality from Mr Jason Jolley, one of our Aboriginal School and Community workers this week.

Our Year 11 Studies in Catholic Thought students are examining life’s big questions including, “What does it mean to be human?”  And “How do we encounter reality?” Students have had the opportunity to discuss and think deeply about these questions, exploring how the Catholic religion answers them. The Human Person unit reiterates the dignity of each person and explores the philosophies that underpin Catholic beliefs and practices.

Throughout the term, Year 12 Studies of Religion students have developed an understanding of the significant impact of St Paul of Tarsus on the development and expression of Christianity. Students have investigated Paul’s conversion, missionary journeys and famous epistles, and explored the ways he has influenced Christian practice, such as the sacrament of Eucharist.

Year 12 Studies in Catholic Thought students are currently studying the unit Vice, Virtue and Salvation by investigating what is meant by ‘The Good Life’ and examines the global challenges in our contemporary society. Scripture has been used to inform students about the Christian understanding of the good life, and students have engaged in multiple discussions, leading to a deeper understanding of The Good Life in contemporary society.
