Year 3 News

What an exciting and busy start to the year we’ve had in Grade 3!  We’ve been building our classroom community, developing independence, and discovering what helps us stay engaged and motivated.

Our Unit of Inquiry, Who We Are, has helped us think about what it means to be part of the world and the kind of people we want to be. We explored how cultural traditions shape personal, group, and national identities and learned to acknowledge and respect the traditions of others. As open-minded communicators, we shared stories about our own cultural backgrounds and created a class calendar to record important celebrations. We made connections between different traditions, including religious events like Lent, and used books and videos to deepen our understanding of diversity. We wrapped up the unit with our assembly in Week 9, where we shared our learning and ended with a performance of the Zorba Greek dance, led by Zoe and Niki.

Understanding Who We Are also means thinking about our responsibilities, to ourselves, to others, and to the planet. That’s why we’ve been actively involved in sustainability projects and learning how our actions can make a difference. Through Clean Up Australia Day, we helped clean up the local canal and saw firsthand how small efforts can help the environment. We also joined the Sustainability Scarecrow Competition at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show, using recycled materials from our Loose Parts program to create our Guardian of the Garden (GG). While we didn’t win, we now have our very own scarecrow protecting our veggie garden, a reminder of how we can reuse and repurpose materials in creative ways.

Some other highlights include:

The Golf Clinic’s which introduced (some of) us to new skills, encouraging teamwork and persistence.

Harmony Day Celebrations, recognised the many cultures in our classroom and school and celebrated inclusion and diversity through St Columba’s Kids.

This term, we have not only learned about who we are but also about the kind of people we want to be kind, respectful, and mindful of the world around us. It has been an amazing start to the year, and we’re so proud of how engaged and enthusiastic the students have been. We can’t wait to see what Term 2 brings!
