Foundation Unit

This fortnight, students have been excited to learn more letters and sounds and practice applying them when reading text. We are close to learning all of the individual letter sounds and will move into learning about digraphs (two letters making one sound) early next term.

In Reading, students have continued to practice identifying the initial sound of a word to help them work out the word. We have also looked into what to do if a word is too tricky, and how we can work it out using context clues from the rest of the sentence.

In Writing, students have continued to work on sound counts. Students sound out words and record the sounds they hear in the words. This week we have continued writing a simple retell, writing about the beginning, middle and end of the text, using a variety of mentor texts to ensure students are engaged.

In Maths, we have explored four new topics - capacity, mass, shape and pattern. Students thoroughly enjoyed exploring how much sand different sized containers could hold, down at the school sandpit. Students used vocabulary such as ‘overflow’ and ‘underfill’ to explain their understanding of capacity. For our mass lessons, students learnt about ‘hefting’ and how to determine and explain which objects felt heavier or lighter. During shape and pattern lessons, students explored different 2D shapes and their features and created and continued patterns on paper.

Next week, the Foundation students will participate in their first Lapathon, which will also be a colour run. Please see Compass for more details on this event.
