Learning News Week 4, Term 1 2025

Learning News

This fortnight, we were excited to introduce our new guided reading program across both the Infants and Primary grades. Our students are engaging with decodable readers, which provide targeted support for their reading development. Each day, they focus on key areas such as phonics, fluency, and comprehension to build their skills progressively. This program is designed to ensure that all students have the foundation they need to become confident and capable readers, setting them up for success in their learning journey.

Kindergarten

Our Kindergarten students have settled in beautifully and are enjoying the routines of school. Over the past few weeks, they have been exploring the concept of families and learning how every family is unique. Through a variety of books, they discovered that families can live in different types of homes, such as houses or apartments and in different countries.

To bring their learning to life, students engaged in hands-on activities, using natural materials and playdough to create representations of their own families and homes. It has been wonderful to see their creativity and enthusiasm as they share their experiences and celebrate the diversity of families.

Well Done Kindergarten. Keep up the great work!

Year 1

Year 1 had a fantastic time exploring self-expression through art! Using watercolours and black outline markers, they created beautiful self-portraits, capturing their unique features with creativity and confidence. This activity helped develop fine motor skills, colour mixing techniques, and a sense of identity—all while having fun!

Well done, Year 1! 🌟

Year 2

Year 2 have finished learning about 2D-shapes. We learned to name and identify shapes based on their properties such as the number of sides and corners. We then used coloured paper to draw various shapes and place them in positions to create an image. The students showed their amazing abilities to manipulate shapes to create a  wonderful piece of artwork! Well done Year 2!

Year 3

Year 3 has been working hard in Science to investigate the three main states of matter. We have been learning to classify objects as either a solid, liquid or a gas and describe their properties. Year 3 has discovered that some objects can change states and fit into more than one category. We completed an experiment and attempted to identify which state custard can be described as. Year 3 mixed custard powder with water and completed a number of tests to distinguish whether it was a solid, a liquid or both. It was a lot of fun and a little bit messy!

Year 4

In Year 4 we commenced reading our class novel ‘The Thing About Oliver’ by Deborah Kelly. We have been looking at the structure of this narrative text and the importance of having strong characters. While looking at the different characters within the novel we have spoken about perspectives that can change depending on which character's point of view is being portrayed and how this then drives the storyline.

Our next focus will be looking at writing from different character perspectives, which we will love to share with you soon.

Stage 3

Stage 3 started reading their new text “Storm Boy” by Colin Thiele over the last two weeks, and have been analysing the rich language that is used in the text.  Listening to the descriptions, the students had to draw a visual representation of what they saw in their mind - a technique called visualising.  When doing this, they draw on their connections from the text to their own experiences, other texts and to the world around them.  There were some amazing results!

We have also been working on restating the question when answering comprehension questions so the reader knows what the question is without reading it themselves.  A valuable skill that will be very helpful throughout their education.  Well done Stage 3!
