Year 5/6 News

Learning Centre Four

What an incredible four weeks of school it has been so far! The Year 5 and 6 students have settled in smoothly during these first weeks back, demonstrating enthusiasm and engagement in their learning. They have embraced classroom routines with increasing independence and responsibility, contributing thoughtfully to discussions and working collaboratively with peers. With Summer Gala practice, buddies and the Wonder of Living Workshop, it has been a great time for all involved.

Year 5

Literacy:

In Literacy, we explored texts by Graeme Base, including The Legend of the Golden Snail, Eye to Eye, and Animalia. We focused on predicting text content and enhancing our vocabulary to improve writing. We examined how Graeme Base uses various strategies to make his books engaging, such as descriptive language and intricate illustrations.

Numeracy:

We created dot plot graphs using given data sets and used Google Sheets to organise and visualise data. Our focus then shifted to number patterns, where we identified factors and multiples.

Inquiry:

We studied the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating, exploring food groups, portion sizes, and nutrition labels. Students created daily meal plans incorporating balanced nutrition.

Religion:

We learned about Prayer through Mass, breaking down its different parts and elements. This knowledge will support us in designing our own liturgies throughout the year.

Wellbeing:

We identified our strengths and challenges, recognizing how they shape us. We engaged in guided meditation and explored how different events trigger emotional responses.

Buddies:

Our Year 5 students had the wonderful opportunity to meet their Prep buddies for the first time. They shared lunch together, engaging in friendly conversations and getting to know each other. This special time allowed the older students to support and welcome their younger peers into the school community. To end the gathering on a joyful note, everyone joined in singing the school song, creating a sense of unity and belonging.

Year 6

Literacy:

Our English studies combined vocabulary enrichment with creative writing, inspired by Gary Crew’s books such as The Pig on the Titanic and The Viewer. Students developed personalised glossaries, documenting new words with definitions, examples, and synonyms. They applied these skills to their creative writing project, My Amazing Summer, focusing on story structure, suspense, and vivid descriptions.

Numeracy:

Students explored data representation through side-by-side column charts, bar charts, and histograms. They analysed data using statistical measures like mode and range and learned to describe distributions using mathematical terminology. Their ability to interpret and summarise data is preparing them for real-world applications, from climate trends to population statistics.

Inquiry:

Students investigated human body systems, including the circulatory, digestive, lymphatic, respiratory, and nervous systems. Using visual thinking strategies, they deepened their understanding through diagrams and collaborative research. Presentations allowed students to become experts in their chosen system while developing teamwork and communication skills.

Religion:

We explored Lectio Divina, an ancient prayer practice focusing on meditation and reflection. Using Luke 4:16-21, students engaged with scripture on a personal level, allowing God’s word to resonate deeply. This practice strengthened their faith and helped them connect biblical teachings to their daily lives.

Wellbeing:

Through morning circle discussions and interactive activities, students built emotional awareness and empathy. They explored non-verbal cues, such as facial expressions and tone of voice, to enhance their understanding of emotions. This foundation supports a positive and inclusive classroom environment.

Wonder of Living Workshop:

On Tuesday, 18th February, we were delighted to welcome Jill from CatholicCare to our school for an informative session on puberty, changing emotions, and the physical changes our bodies go through. It was wonderful to see so many families in attendance, engaging in these important discussions. We encourage you to continue these conversations at home, creating a safe and open space for your children to ask questions and share their thoughts. Navigating these changes can be challenging, and your support plays a vital role in helping them feel confident and understood. Thank you to everyone who joined us—we appreciate your involvement in supporting the wellbeing of our students!
