Year 3/4 News
Learning Centre Two
The last few weeks have been very busy in Years 3 and 4. The students have settled more into the daily routines and have been working hard in all areas of the curriculum. The year 3's have started their Reconciliation unit and are starting to prepare for the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
Literacy
The Year 4's have been completing an author study about Leigh Hobbs, they have been looking over the last few weeks at the texts 'Horrible Harriet', 'Fiona the Pig' and 'Mr Chicken goes to Mars'. In Reading we have been creating characters/friends for Horrible Harriet,Fiona the Pig and Mr Chicken. This week we are reading 'Mr Chicken goes to Mars' and have drawn a picture of Mr Chicken just about to go to space.
The Year 3 students have enjoying an author’s study on Mem Fox, they have read 'Night Noises', 'Wilfred Gordon McDonald Partridge' and 'Possum Magic'. They have been using the words and pictures from the text to describe the characters, retelling the stories and answering questions using evidence from text.
All the Year 3's and 4's have been learning how to write a narrative. They have focused on planning, character development and the use of simple and compound sentences.
Maths
In maths the Year 4's have been learning about fractions of a collection and fractions on a number line! We have been using vocabulary such as the denominator and numerator, as well as working out fractions of a collection.
The Year 3's have been looking at place value and regrouping numbers. They have been solving addition and subtraction problems, learning about fact families and extending facts.
Religion
In Religion Year 4's have been learning about the parts of mass is and the sanctus! Today they even got to create their own sanctus with a modern twist and created an art piece depicting part of the Sanctus that speaks to us.
Year 3's have begun their unit on forgiveness, they are using the scripture story of the Prodigal Son to explore 'God forgives us and wants us to forgive others' and relate this to their own lives and to the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
There is a family night on Tuesday March 11th @ 6.30pm for all students who are making the First Reconciliation this year.
Inquiry
In inquiry Year 4 have been learning about inspiring people who faced hard challenges in their lives. Some of these people are Anne Frank, Malala, Neale Daniher. We are using our research skills to find out what their challenges are and how they overcame them. We are being inspired and learning what it means to face challenges no matter what .
Year 3's are focusing on who they are, their emotions, strengths and talents and how they can be an effective part of a group. They are investigating and describing how others might feel in particular situations and how to take action when someone feels a particular way.
Inform and Empower
On Wednesday the 19th all of the Year 3’s and 4’s took part in their first 'Inform and Empower' session. Learning this term will focus on what the internet is and how it works. We will also explore the rights and responsibilities of digital citizens.
The characters Zoe, Ava and Noah helped to explain what our rights and responsibilities are. The students and staff loved being a part of the Kahoot game online competing against students from across Australia to test their knowledge of the content covered.
Some friendly reminders:
- Specialist Day is every Tuesday - please ensure that sports uniform is worn, and that students have a hat and drink bottle ready for the day.
- No hat no play - please make sure your child brings their hat everyday
- Names on items - please make sure that all of your child’s belongings have their name clearly on them so we can make sure that they get back to them.
- Students to bring their devices to school each day. Please make sure they are charged.
