YEAR FOUR
Grade Bulletin - Term Three, 2025
Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Primary School provides a range of holistic learning experiences to enable students to:
C4: God, Religion and Life - Faith, through prayer and action
In this unit, students will explore prayer and action as a means of growing in faith. They will be introduced to experiences of prayer, drawn from the rich Catholic tradition. Students will explore how Jesus taught us to pray, the place and purpose of prayer and a variety of prayer styles. Students will come to understand that it is the Holy Spirit, alive and active in our lives, that gives us the courage to follow Jesus. The unit focuses on exploring examples of people who demonstrate their faith, inspired by the Holy Spirit, lived out in prayer and action.
E4: Program Morality & Justice - The Commandments
This unit examines how the Commandments of God guide us to live the Christian life. This forms the basis for introducing and exploring Jesus’ new commandment with reference back to the Ten Commandments. The unit leads to a deeper understanding of how the Commandments guide us in living in right relationship with God and others.
Students will listen to, read, view and interpret spoken, written and multimodal texts in which the primary purpose is to persuade. These encompass Aboriginal stories, non-fiction texts, picture books, various types of print and digital texts inclusive of advertising, debates, arguments, discussions, polemics and articles. Students will understand how different types of texts vary in the use of language choices depending on their purpose and context. They will identify and apply characteristic features used in persuasive texts when planning, drafting and publishing persuasive texts.
The students will also continue to develop their skills in persuasive writing and speaking skills through active participation in a Stage 2 Public Speaking Competition. There will be further details shared through COMPASS.
Students will continue practising their reading strategies in Reading Groups. They will also engage in the ‘Soundwaves’ spelling program. The students will be tested on their content words throughout the Term.
Mathematics lessons will be taught daily with a consistent structure of Daily Review, Mental Arithmetic, Explicit Teaching, and Routine Practice activities with Working Mathematically skills embedded throughout the lesson. The topics taught in Term 3 areThis term we will be focusing on the following units:
Week 1-2: Position/Multiplicative Relations
Week 3: Chance & Data
Week 4: Additive Relations
Week 5-6: Representing Number/Geometric measure (Length)
Week 7-8: Non Spatial Measure (Time)/Additive Relations (Week 6-7)

Students will engage in differentiated tasks in their homerooms. These class groups will remain fluid as we cater to the needs of individuals and their understanding of various mathematical concepts. Please continue to practice the instant recall of the two, three, four, five, six and ten times table facts with your children at home, as this is an essential skill they will require.
This term, students will explore how light, heat, and electrical energy work, and how different forces can change the way objects move and behave. They’ll learn how energy can be created, transferred, and used in everyday life. Through hands-on investigations, students will discover how energy and forces are connected and how they play a role in making products and systems work. Additionally, students will participate in Science Week in Week 4.
This term the students will be studying ‘First Contacts'. This unit gives students an insight into what it was like to explore the seas in the early modern period. They will identify how the major discoveries changed the world and the positive and negative effects of world exploration. The students will examine the impact the arrival of Captain Cook had on the Indigenous Australians.
This term, in sport, students will develop their skills in European Handball and Volleyball, with a strong focus on teamwork, coordination, and strategic play. In European Handball, students will refine their techniques in passing, shooting, and defending, with an emphasis on smooth transitions between attack and defence. These skills will support them in the upcoming Interschool Sports Gala Day on the 13th of August. In Volleyball, students will work on serving, setting, and forearm passing, aiming to boost accuracy and control. Through targeted drills, mini-games, and structured match scenarios, students will strengthen their communication, spatial awareness, and decision-making, preparing them for both competitive and cooperative gameplay.
Additionally, students will learn about road safety, covering essential topics such as safe practices when walking, riding as a passenger, and responsible use of roads.
Open Parachute will continue to be implemented K-6 on Fridays. Open Parachute aims to provide practical support on mental health to students. The program aims to reduce stigma and generate authentic dialogue in classrooms about the real issues students face. The psychological skills-building exercises aim to increase empathy, self-compassion, self-awareness, mental health literacy, and self-efficacy in students.
Students will continue with the Amadeus Music Education Program and participate in activities in listening, performing, and organising sound within their regular classroom Music lessons.
It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that they:
Arrive on time for each lesson
Bring their instrument and required accessories to every lesson
Bring their Essential Elements* music book
Bring a lead pencil and eraser
This term in Creative Arts, students will explore how making art involves thoughtful choices about subject matter, techniques, and how ideas are represented. They will have opportunities to express themselves creatively while developing their understanding of visual storytelling and artistic intention. As part of our Term 3 program, students will also be preparing for Book Week, responding to the beautifully illustrated text “Flora” through a range of creative tasks. In addition, students will be engaging in special Father’s Day art projects, where they will design and create thoughtful pieces to celebrate and show appreciation for the important father figures in their lives.
In Music with Mr Parlato students will compose, perform, and create music using their voices, bodies, and various sound sources including digital composition tools. Students will explore music, composed and inspired by Beethoven and develop their understanding of pitch, dynamics, notation and form within music
This term, we’ve made a few changes to our homework routine to better support student learning and ensure tasks are closely aligned with classroom content. One key change is in Mathematics. The Maths Plus mentals workbook will no longer be sent home. Instead, students will receive a weekly maths worksheet that reflects the concepts being taught in class. In addition to this, tasks may also be assigned through Studyladder to provide further practice and reinforcement.
Year 4 students are encouraged to spend up to 30 minutes on homework each day. This includes 20 minutes of nightly reading, which is an essential part of their learning. Students are required to record what they read in their reading log each day, and we kindly ask parents to sign the log to confirm this. The reading log and homework book, which students will use to complete set tasks throughout the term, are both due every Friday. For further details regarding homework requirements, go to Google Classroom Homework Landing Page.
