SWAG - Science and Agriculture

As we settle into the new school year, our students are embracing fresh challenges and exciting learning experiences across all year levels. With a strong emphasis on practical skills, critical thinking, and curiosity, our science classrooms have been buzzing with activity.
Year 7: A Scientific Beginning
Our Year 7 students have embarked on their journey into the world of science by exploring the fundamentals of the subject. They are becoming familiar with the NSW Science Curriculum and are gaining hands-on experience with essential scientific equipment. A major highlight has been their introduction to the Bunsen burner, where they have learned the importance of safety procedures and how to effectively use it in experiments. This foundational knowledge will set the stage for more complex investigations in the future.
Year 8: Discovering the Living World
Year 8 students have dived into the fascinating study of the Living World, beginning with the building blocks of life - cells. They have been learning to distinguish between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells and understanding their key differences. Additionally, they have started exploring organ systems, preparing their theoretical knowledge for upcoming practical lessons where they will have the opportunity to dissect organs. These hands-on experiences will help them connect classroom theory to real-world biological structures.
Year 9: Exploring Ecosystems
Ecosystems are the focus for our Year 9 students in term 1, who have been actively investigating the intricate relationships between organisms and their environments. As part of their studies, they will be conducting various soil tests to understand soil composition, fertility, and its impact on plant and animal life. These experiments will enhance their grasp of how ecosystems function and the role of abiotic factors in sustaining life.
Year 10: The Physics of Motion
For our Year 10 students, physics has taken centre stage as they explore motion, including scalar and vector quantities. Their enthusiasm is evident as they engage in calculations and practical investigations that deepen their understanding of forces and movement. With real-world applications and interactive problem-solving exercises, they are discovering just how dynamic and engaging physics can be.
Year 11: Exploring Cell Theory
Our Year 11 students have begun their senior science studies with an in-depth look at cell theory and cell types. They are eager to apply their knowledge by using compound microscopes to prepare and examine slides. This hands-on approach will allow them to appreciate the microscopic world and develop essential laboratory skills that will serve them throughout their scientific journey.
Learning Science
We are integrating many exciting approaches to foster a positive and growth-oriented learning environment. One of our focuses is on GEM - Gratitude, Empathy, and Mindfulness. By incorporating these principles into our daily science lessons, we aim to create a classroom culture that values kindness, reflection, and appreciation. Encouraging students to practice gratitude, show empathy towards others, and be mindful in their studies not only enhances their well-being but also improves their engagement and resilience in learning.
