F-2 Reading
An essential part of becoming an engaged, confident reader is the ability to choose books that are a good fit. In the F to 2 school sector, students are learning to pick appropriate books for independent reading. We have introduced the I PICK criteria to empower children to choose successfully, wherever they may be, without being tied to a levelled label.
Each student is working on choosing good-fit books they can read independently. They practise using the five-finger rule to select books that they can read most of the words.
Students practice quiet reading daily during our literacy block, working on stamina and concentration. As students gain confidence in choosing books of interest that are a good fit, they will transition to decoding strategies such as:
- eagle eye: using pictures to decode.
- initial sounds: looking at the first sound of the word.
- blending: Breaking words into known chunks.
We recommend the following when reading at home:
- try to read daily with your child.
- ask your child what their reading goal is so you can practice it together.
- If your child is unable to track or gets lost when reading, encourage them to point to each word as they read. Another option is to hold a ruler or piece of plain paper underneath each line and move it down as they read.
- encourage your child to sound out and blend unfamiliar words aloud. Be patient and give them time before stepping in to help them. Help your child to sound out rather than telling them words if they do get stuck.
- talk about the book. Ask questions about the story, make predictions about what might happen next, and have some fun changing the characters or the end of the story.
