UOW DISCOVERY DAY

Discovery Days at UOW gives Year 12 students the opportunity to experience firsthand what a day at university is like. Our EHS students were able to engage in numerous workshops such as ‘Law: You be the Judge’, ‘How does marketing influences what we buy?’ and ‘Nutrition facts and fallacies: How do we know what is right?’. Students entered their HSC subjects and they were given a timetable for the day that was relatable to their subject areas. This is an excellent opportunity for Year 12 students to explore what their future could look like. All students had a brilliant day.

WSU FAST FORWARD FUTURE STUDENT ENGAGMENT YEAR 12 CONFERENCE AT PARRAMATTA SOUTH

EHS students joined with other Year 12 students and teachers from 65 schools in the Year 12 Engagement Conference. This marks the final on-campus activity for students in the Fast Forward program since Year 9. Students from the Academy U, Pathways to Dreaming, and Pasifika Achievement to Higher Education (PATHE) programs also participated. Throughout the day, students attended two interactive sessions from over 30 academic workshops, tailored to their interests and led by Western Sydney University academics. Our nine EHS students enjoyed the day experiencing WSU.

YES PROGRAM

During Term 1, two students had the opportunity to participate in the YES Program at TAFE.  These students gained a practical taster in the course of Beauty. They attended one day a week for 8 weeks. This provided them  with the knowledge of pathways into TVET, SBAT and traineeships.

In Term 2 there will be 8 students participating in a variety of programs. These programs include; Beauty, Floristry, Medical Administration and Real Estate.

NRL REFEREE COURSE

EHS students had the opportunity to gain their qualifications to referee junior NRL matches. Students completed online modules at home prior to engaging in a face-to-face workshop. During the workshop they had the opportunity to discuss a variety of topics with experienced referees and also revise their knowledge from their online modules. Students refereed each other during a friendly game of touch football to demonstrate their understanding of the course.

Congratulations to the students that completed the 6-12 Years Community Referee course.

WHITE CARD COURSES

During Term 1, 37 students have completed their White Card qualification. All students were fully engaged throughout the course. The presenter shared numerous workplace stories to enhance the learning experience. The course included both a written and scenario-based component, showcasing our students' ability to collaborate effectively as a team while prioritising safety. This qualification will prepare our students for hands-on work experience and future roles on construction sites.

Congratulations to these students!

MWLP Special Recognition Event

I had the pleasure to attend the MWLP Special Recognition Awards. Alumni Adam Malak is a student who participated in the Entry Level Academy (ELA), a program specifically designed to assist students in Years 10, 11 & 12, who would like help transitioning from school into full time employment. Adam was presented with his award for going above and beyond during his work placement and went on to gain employment in the electrotechnology industry.

Congratulations Adam!

LUNCH TIME WORK EXPERIENCE WORKSHOP

During the workshop, students received comprehensive guidance on how to effectively find work experience opportunities. They were provided with detailed information on the process and strategies for securing placements. Students were also given the required Student Placement forms to present to potential workplace hosts, ensuring they have all the necessary paperwork to facilitate the arrangement. There will be upcoming workshops for students during Term 2.

TVET  (Technical and Vocational Education and Training)

EHS provides our students with the opportunity to enrol in TVET courses. Currently there are 10 students gaining another qualification while completing their HSC.

TVET courses are TAFE-delivered vocational education and training courses that senior secondary school students can take as part of their HSC study program.

  • Benefits:

    • Career head start: TVET courses help students gain practical skills and industry-specific knowledge, preparing them for future careers.

    • HSC contribution: These courses count towards the HSC and can also contribute to an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR).

    • Advanced standing: Completing a TVET course can provide advanced standing if students continue with TAFE NSW after school.

    • Nationally recognized qualifications: TVET courses are nationally recognized and can help students upskill or prepare for further study.

Further information will be emailed to Year 10 parents and students when TAFE have updated their course information.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Five students have participated in work experience this term. The work experience has ranged from retail to trades. Aidyn Steel, Year 10 had the opportunity to complete his work experience with Jetstar. They spent the day learning about how Jetstar operates, including its media, brand. He also visited the training centre and had the opportunity to try out the Qantas simulator.

It is important for students to participate in work experience. This opportunity provides them with an experience in the world of work. It also can help engage students in their education when they can see the link between their course knowledge and how it will contribute to their future careers.

EXPLORING CAREERS

Children are never too young to discuss and investigate careers. At home and at school, it is necessary for our children to have a clearer understanding of their options and what they need to do to achieve their career goals.

Starting career exploration can provide your child with an understanding of how their education is one stepping stone towards their career aspirations. Other reasons for having these regular discussions at home include:

Clarifying interests and strengths: Helping students identify what they’re passionate about and where their strengths lie. This can provide valuable insights into which careers they might enjoy and excel in.

Setting career goals early: By exploring potential careers early, students can set clear goals and work toward them, whether through part-time jobs, or volunteering. This can give them a head start in building the skills and experience needed for their chosen field.

Informed decision-making: The earlier students investigate careers, the more informed their decisions will be when it comes time to choose whether they want to engage in TAFE, university or other training program. It can help them avoid choosing a career path that doesn’t align with their interests or lifestyle goals.

Gaining a competitive edge: Students who start early may have the opportunity to gain relevant experience through work experience, school opportunities or taking career-related courses. This can make them more competitive in the job market after graduation.

Understanding education and training requirements: Investigating careers allows students to learn about the specific education and training requirements for various fields. This knowledge helps them plan their academic path more effectively.

THINKING ABOUT HSC SUBJECT SELECTION

During Term 2, Year 10 students should be starting to think about their future. Whether that is an apprenticeship/ traineeship, TAFE or university.

Your goal is to achieve the best possible Higher School Certificate (HSC) result. Choose courses that suit your strengths, interests, and future plans.

Here’s how to make the right choices:

* Understand course requirements – Know the details of the course, including any major works or performances for exams.

* Explore opportunities – Check course descriptions for potential pathways to further study, training, or careers. This could provide you with prerequisites for future course applications.
