Grade 1/2 Area

Ms. Emily Giliam, Miss Stella Baker Campbell, Miss Katherine Lyon,  Mrs Sarah Castellas and Mrs Sue Ritson

Welcome to this week's glimpse into 1/2D!

Recently in Maths we have been learning about reading time on analogue clocks and using the language of o'clock, half-past, quarter-past and quarter-to to describe the times we read. Please continue to use this language and quiz your children on analogue time to reinforce this learning! Shown below are picture from our lesson about minutes, which involved seeing how many times we could do particular activities (star jumps, push ups, writing our name) in one minute.

During Word Study this term we have been learning about how to use the suffix '-er' to create new words. We know that adding '-er' to a verb creates a noun that means "one who does something," i.e. teach becomes teacher. We also know that adding '-er' to adjectives intensifies them, i.e. big becomes bigger. There are 3 spelling rules to remember when adding '-er' to base words, which are visible on the sheets below. These photos demonstrate the fabulous word work and beautiful handwriting of Zara, Leevi, Harvey and Mia Z.

In Wellbeing, we recently had a delightful Resilience Project lesson thinking about experiences we are grateful for. After listening to and reflecting on Alison Lester's fabulous book, Magic Beach, the students designed a book cover to illustrate an adventure from their own life that they feel grateful for. We hope you enjoy our magnificent book covers!

As part of our Discovery learning this term, we have been looking into the 5Rs of sustainability - refuse, reduce, recycle, reuse and rot. Students have worked in small groups to research their chosen R, thinking about what it looks like and how it helps the environment. We developed scripts and students have practised and performed their ideas to create short videos, which we will premiere at the Discovery Open Afternoon (3:15-4:15pm on Tuesday July 1st). We hope you can come along to see them!

Thank you for reading,

Ms. Emily and 1/2D
