HAVE A GREAT HOLIDAY EVERYONE!
Congratulations to Lincoln Fage and Olivia Robinson for stepping into the Auslan Captain roles for 2025!
Happy Harmony Day!
We celebrated Harmony Week and Day 17th-20th March
Take a look at some of the Year Ones and Twos announcing this in Auslan.
Auslan Day celebrates the rich history, culture, community and language of the Australian Deaf community by honouring the date of first publication of the Auslan dictionary.
Capturing the foundation students making their first fingerspelling steps of their own name! It's always an exciting part of learning to witness. They have been making the link between words and letters being written, spoken and signed. The beauty of communication in all of its wonderous ways. In the past few weeks, the Foundation students have also been learning the signs for colours through listening to, and watching signed stories. They have been drawing and signing colours of the food in their lunch boxes too!
Students from Year One and Two have been busy discussing different groups that they belong to. These groups have included family groups, various sporting, swimming, singing, extended family, school, cubs, gymnastics, drama groups and so many more. We have been watching a couple of videos and discussing the content that raises awareness of the differences and similarities of Deaf and hearing people within families, compared to our own family experiences.
Both Year levels have been practising their fingerspelling with partners by fingerspelling simple words and the other student writing the letters down on a whiteboard. This has been a great way to practise letters that are not in their name. Roll call is becoming quicker with many of the students fingerspelling their name on arrival to their lesson.
The Year three and four students have made great strides in their understanding of Auslan and the use of signing, facial expressions, and visual communication. They have designed their flags, based on their likes, passions and important things in their lives. It has been great getting an insight into everyone's personalities and interests. They put together at least 2 sentence presentation on their choices in their designs and signed to me using the flag as a visual support.
The Year Five and Six students have also been creating flags as part of the first term unit on belonging, identity and culture. The students have created some very interesting designs that have shown their interests, family backgrounds and friendships among other things. The flag were presented to me with a 4 or more sentence presentation that explained some parts of their flag. This was assisted with visual support form classroom posters, dictionaries and sentence starters. It has been amazing watching each student create, practice and present their work these last two weeks.
