Mathematics

This term, Year Three and Four students have been focusing on the Mathematical strand of Number, exploring key operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. A strong emphasis has been placed on understanding place value, helping students recognize the value of each digit in a number and how it influences calculations. Through hands-on activities and guided practice, students have developed their ability to solve vertical equations effectively. They have also explored different mental and written strategies to solve problems, reinforcing their number fluency and confidence in working with a range of numbers.

Students have also practiced applying their knowledge to solve real-world worded problems, developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills. They have practiced identifying key information, selecting the appropriate operation, and using efficient strategies to find solutions. By working on a variety of question types, students have built their ability to interpret mathematical language and apply their learning in meaningful ways.

Times Tables

This term the Year Three and Four students began learning their times tables. Each week or fortnight, the cohort will focus on learning a new times table; playing games and learning songs in the classroom to help the students learn. Automatic recall of times tables is extremely useful and important for many areas of Mathematics, and we envision that all students will know their times tables by Year Five.

Each student has been given a laminated times tables chart (pictured below) to keep at home and assist them in practicing. Students are also encouraged to utilise the website timestables.com to practice their times tables if a device is available.

Harmony Day

On Friday the 24th of March, we celebrated Harmony Day. Harmony Day is a celebration of cultural diversity, respect, and belonging. At Upwey South Primary School, it is celebrated by wearing cultural dress or the colour orange. Leading up to Harmony Day, the Year Three and Four students learnt about the history of Harmony Day, and the ways in which it is celebrated. The students collaborated together to create a Harmony Day display which showed everybody's hand prints. The display also highlights some of the countries and cultures students at Upwey South are from.

The Year Three and Four teaching team wish everyone a safe and happy Easter break, and we look forward to a busy Term 2!
